TW: Alcohol, being intoxicated, mentions of accidentally over drinking
CW: Fluff, smooching, dare I say premarital hand holding

"Hey Jasper, I'm going to finish this bottle of (FavoriteAlcoholicDrink) and it might take me out a bit, is that okay with you?" I wiggled the bottle in an asking gesture at the large gem sitting on my couch. As per usual she glanced over at me and gave her usual "half-assed" huff of approval.

As much as I was fond of Jasper, she wasn't much of a conversationalist. I'd been hosting the gem for a few months now after an incident in the forest with Steven. I wasn't told much but it clearly had Jasper too shaken up to the point where she avoided her clearing all together. One morning when I was headed out of my house for work and I found her sitting pitifully on my porch, soaking wet from the horrendous Beach City winter rain.

"Human, I wish to temporarily reside at your base, Pink-" She hesitated. "Steven, said you might allow it because I don't know where else to go."

Her vulnerability at the time surprised me, although it didn't continue. I knew Jasper was incredibly resourceful and self-sufficient, but I suppose there's only so much you can do on a foreign planet. Sure, she could've run off to another remote location or even the beta kindergarten, but ever since the Diamonds had made multiple back to back visits in the last year or so, humans all over the globe had become fascinated with the alien race that shared our Earth. Eventually, some crazed conspiracy theorist person or group would find her and no one really wanted to know what would occur if that happened.

Steven was right, I quickly allowed the gem to stay with me because I was largely impressed that she was asking for help. Since then our exchanges have been minimal and quiet. Jasper usually sat around outside or on the couch if she wasn't throwing rocks around on the beach. I lived below a cliff side on the outskirts of Beach City, my front yard facing the water. It was nice, quiet, secluded. When I first moved into town about 5 years ago I had palm trees and other indigenous flora planted all around my porch so I would have a little forest of sorts to wander in. To say it was my sanctuary would be an understatement, so I will admit I was a tad hesitant when Jasper, The Ultimate Quartz, asked to share it. Though I would be lying if I said I wasn't starting to enjoy her presence.

There was one night that I particularly appreciated her. About 2 months after Jasper had started staying with me I went out to a bar with a few friends and got way too drunk. Thankfully Jenny was able to drive me home and get me in the door but after that I'd taken a turn for the worst. My body rejected the liquor and I spent about 45 minutes shaking and heaving over the toilet. Jasper must've been curious about the noise because she opened the door to see my pathetic figure crumpled on the floor.

"Are you dying?" She asked.

"No." I laughed weakly. "I just made one too many stupid choices."

"Oh... Do you... Need help?"

"I definitely won't fight it."

Jasper took a good amount of time that night making sure I was taken care of, getting me water, meds, even making me a plate of toast and apple slices. The gesture confused me for sure, especially since she didn't particularly seem like she wanted to do it, but for a moment there was an understanding between us. She knew my body needed maintenance and care, I knew I was going to have a rancid hangover if I didn't accept help.

Since then that understanding has continued and now I dare say it has evolved into a kind of respect and mutual fondness. Even if Jasper was a recluse, the mild disgust and discontent that clouded her eyes in her first few weeks had melted away and been replaced with almost a mild amusement, especially if I was drinking. I saw it flicker in a tug of her lips as I poured my (FAD) into a glass. Thankfully Jasper hasn't had to hold my hair back since the last incident, but I still felt like it was polite to ask since she was usually the one who had to deal with my bullshit.
