The pickup truck slowly rolled down the road with a trailer load of kids towed behind it. The lean boy sat closest to the front, tucked against the metal guard connected to the trailer. The cheers and shouts from the parade onlookers rose higher when a few kids from the truck chucked handfuls of candy at them. The boy didn't smile. He sat with his legs dangling over the trailer edge, his hands grasped together between them.

His red hoodie blended in with the other red-donning children, but from recognition, he stood out in every way. He turned his head to mutter to his friend beside him, his lips barely moving before he looked back ahead. As the truck slid past, he stared in my direction, familiarity crossing his facial expression before looking away.
