MACKIE THOMAS

i was took my seat at the wnba draft. the atmosphere was electric, and i could feel the anticipation in the air. i glanced behind me and saw paige seated just a row back, surrounded by teammates. i tried to focus on the stage, but my mind kept drifting to everything that had happened between us.

as the draft began, i watched as caitlin clark and kate martin were called up to the stage, their faces lighting up with joy. i couldn't help but smile, feeling proud of my fellow athletes. then, the moment came when a'aliyah edwards was drafted to the washington mystics. paige jumped up, cheering loudly.

then, nika mühl's name was called, and she was drafted to the seattle storm. paige was on her feet again, clapping and shouting words of encouragement. i admired paige's enthusiasm but couldn't shake the awkwardness between us.

during a lull in the action, paige made her way over to me. "hey, mackie," she said, a playful smile on her lips. "crazy night, huh?"

i nodded, trying to keep my cool. "yeah, it's been wild."

paige leaned in a little closer, her tone light but with a hint of something more. "so, about those dating rumors... people really have wild imaginations, don't they?"

i felt my cheeks flush. "yeah, it's ridiculous," i said, laughing nervously.

paige's eyes sparkled. "well, at least it got people talking, right?"

before i could respond, kate martin approached us. "hey, mackie! I just heard we're both going to kelsey plum's dawg class this summer."

i welcomed the distraction. "yeah, i'm really looking forward to it. it'll be great to train with KP."

kate grinned. "for sure! see you there."

as kate walked away, i noticed a few reporters heading in my direction. i quickly turned to paige. "i need to dodge these interviews. you know how much i hate the media."

paige nodded understandingly. "go ahead, i'll cover for you."

i slipped away, but i couldn't help but feel a mix of emotions—excitement for the future, confusion about paige, and a bit of relief to be out of the spotlight, even if just for a moment.
