It all began when the deceitful Lord Karius Sentinel drove Selene Mayflower, a witch, to her death. He was then cursed by the witch's sister, Sabina Mayflower, so that his future daughters would be born as mermaids. Mermaids are a menace; they lure men with their enchanting songs, then drown and devour them.
However, mankind can be crueler. When a mermaid is caught, they are brutally killed, and their organs are sold. Specific parts, such as the mermaid's hearts, are said to bestow bravery and fearlessness upon those who consume them. The voicebox is believed to weave spells of loyalty and persuasion, while the eyes are whispered to unveil glimpses of future realms and the unseen, sought after for divination rituals that reveal hidden truths, impending dangers, or forthcoming events. As for the tail fin, it is rumored to grant unparalleled agility and speed.
These tales captivate some hearts with wonder, while others dismiss them as mere fantasy.
Selene Mayflower was just fifteen years old and deeply in love with Lord Karius. When she became pregnant, Lord Karius, intending to marry his childhood sweetheart Lady Orielle Storm, ordered Selene to rid herself of the child. Heartbroken, Selene, in despair, drank poison that ended her life.
Sabina Mayflower, enraged by Lord Karius's actions, chose the occasion of his wedding feast to enact her vengeance.
Deep within the heart of the mountain at Whispering Falls, Sabina conducted a ritual using an ancient, dried-up dragon's eye. After hours of completing the ritual, Lady Orielle felt a sudden gust of wind in her chamber during the night. It seemed as if another presence was there, and she heard a faint, distant voice. Sabina Mayflower departed from the mountains thereafter, disappearing without a trace and never seen again.
