"Dawnwing, I'm sorry... Berryflight-"
Foxfang took a step back and looked at Dawnwing as the medicine cat stuttered.
"Dawnwing, Berryflight's dead," Floodshine meowed, looking down at her bloodstained paws. "I know who killed her."
Dawnwing's eyes narrowed. His bloody paws stumbled back and he looked at Foxfang who dipped her head sadly.
"Look, you can't go back into battle," mewed Floodshine. Foxfang nodded.
"I have to avenge her if it's the last thing I do!" Dawnwing yowled, his back fur bristling. "Tell me, who was it?!"
Floodshine nodded. "Harestar."
Dawnwing let his mouth drop. His sister... killed by the ThunderClan leader? It didn't matter. He was going to rip Harestar's neck into pieces and continue until he was really dead.
"But your Berryflight's kits, remember?" Foxfang suddenly mentioned, padding forward. "They'll have no family besides grumpy Onepool."
Dawnwing looked confused. "She has no kits."
"She didn't tell you? She had two she-cats and a tom a half-moon ago," Floodshine purred.
"Who's looking after them?" Dawnwing snapped, swishing his tail.
"Onepool. You better get there before she tells them a scary story."
Dawnwing bolted into the nursery and looked at Onepool. "Where are my sister's kits?!"
Onepool rolled her eyes and moved a paw forward. Three tiny kits were curled up against the elder's belly fluff. "So where's Berryflight?"
Dawnwing lowered his head and his eyes dulled. Onepool guessed at once.
"Oh no..."
Suddenly, one of the she-kits began to cough and mew loudly. She looked thin and starving. They all did.
"Floodshine, come here!" called Dawnwing as both she-kits started to cough.
Onepool stood up as the medicine cat padded in. The elder looked concerned as Floodshine checked the kits.
"The she-kits won't make it. They're too weak, I'm sorry," Floodshine meowed, tears in her eyes.
"And the tom?" both elder and warrior snapped.
"He'll live, but he'll most likely be weak somewhere. He might have a lame foot or something like that."
"I'll name him... Berrykit," Dawnwing announced, his claws digging into the ground. "I have to avenge Berryflight. I'm sorry if I return as a StarClan cat but I can't let Berryflight's death haunt her kits knowing no-one avenged her."
Onepool nodded and curled back around Berrykit. His fluffy black fur puffed out contently.
Floodshine picked up the two pale dead kits and trotted out to bury them sadly.
Dawnwing looked up at the sky before he raced to ThunderClan. He hid his scent in a wild garlic patch and stood over ThunderClan's camp entrance. "I'll go around instead of down the entrance," he thought and padded around.
"Good," he thought. "The leader's in their den."
He looked up at the now night sky, fur bristling. "This is for you, Berryflight. And your two she-kits."
He charged into the leader's den and ripped the leader's neck to shreds. The deputy Appleclaw slunk in at the sound and pinned Dawnwing, whose pale yellow tabby fur was bloody and cold.
The deputy's claws sunk into his shoulders and Dawnwing let out a shriek.
Dawnwing muttered, "For Berryflight..." before his breath turned ragged and then stopped.
