Muffin sat at the foldable table her family had brought on the camping trip. A plate of grilled meat lay untouched in front of her.
Her cousin had returned from the creek some minutes ago. Excited as can be she began to tell their family about how she reunited with the friend she made here years ago.
Bluey was ecstatic and her excitement seemed to rub off on the rest of the family, all of whom were happy for her.
The blue heeler sat and talked excitedly about her French-Canadian friend and everyone listened with interest.
Everyone but Muffin that is.
Muffin could only think about her book. Her cousin had taken it out of her caravan earlier that day without her permission.
Originally she planned on marching down to take it from her right away. It was an autographed copy after all, almost new and she had not even had the chance to read it.
Her mum had convinced her otherwise, however, assuring her Bluey would take care of it.
Muffin realized that was a lie when Bluey came back without her book. She was horrified to learn that she left it under her tree, by the creek, near the water!
She wanted to get up and run to rescue her book at that moment, but her parents had insisted she eat first, claiming her book would be fine.
So here she was eating as fast as she could, and worrying about her book.
"...and he's going to be here another two days," Bluey told her family, excitement clear in her voice
Muffin wanted to care about what she was saying. She would care if she knew her book was safe.
It frustrated her how little the others seemed to care about her book. Did they not know the effort she went through to get it?
They were almost sold out by the time she got her paws on a copy. Then she had to stand in a massive line to get it autographed by the author.
She had planned on starting it today, but now that would likely be impossible unless she hurried.
Then came a sound that struck fear into Muffin's heart, thunder.
Not a second afterwards she felt a drop of rain hit her nose.
Sensing the impending danger, Muffin leaped off her chair and began running in the direction of the creek and the rain began pelting the ground not a moment afterwards.
Using her phone's flashlight she navigated through the darkening forest. Luckily the trumpet tree made for an easy landmark.
She just hoped it would also shield her book from the rain that was now coming down in strength.
Seriously, what were the chances a sudden storm would appear out of the blue?
Muffin made it to the tree and shined her light down on the ground.
"Oh no...this...can't be...." she mumbled and fell to her knees
Her book was sprawled open on the ground, with its pages facing down on the wet dirty ground.
Slowly she picked it up and examined the damage.
Several pages were completely soggy and others were caked with dirt and mud.
Worse yet, she flipped to the front and saw that the author's signature was smudged and nearly incomprehensible.
Despite the cold rain hitting her, she felt red-hot anger boil within her.
