"It's over, Five."

Those words shattered him into a million pieces, leaving an endless void where his heart used to be. The moment she spoke the phrase, he felt it—an icy grip around every part of him. Lila's eyes held a pain that reflected his own, but why should she be hurt? It was him standing here, utterly bewildered, trying to comprehend how everything went wrong.

They had shared so much. Lila was the first person he allowed himself to love since... well, since forever. He loved her fiercely, gently, giving her pieces of himself he never thought he could. She was his refuge, his companion in a world filled with nothing but rats and ashes. And now, with a single sentence, she stripped away that refuge, leaving him exposed and vulnerable, leaving him alone.

He replayed the moments in his mind, the laughter they shared over stolen glances, the gasps that escaped their lips during their conversations, the way she made the darkness feel a little less overwhelming. All of it crumbled into dust with those three little words. He couldn't understand how love had transformed into this betrayal.

Love was such a funny thing.

Why?

He wanted to scream, but he was too stunned for words. She was still looking at him, searching his face for something—understanding? Forgiveness? But all he felt was the weight of loss dragging him deeper into despair. How could she be the one hurt when she was the one who kissed him first, giving him that spark that ignited a fire in his chest? The irony twisted like a knife—he had trusted her, opened his heart to her, and now she was throwing it away as if it meant nothing.

His heart pounded in his chest, heavy and relentless. It screamed at him to take some action, to pull her back, to fix whatever had been broken. But what was there left to fix? Love had always seemed like a cruel joke, a beautiful illusion that left him empty in the end. The ache was all-consuming, like a wave of sorrow crashing over him, leaving no room for breath, no space for hope.

Five had always thought of himself as the smart one, the tactical mind in a world full of idiots. Yet here he was, utterly lost, grappling with emotions he rarely allowed himself to feel. Was this what they called heartbreak? It felt more like drowning—each memory pulling him deeper until he could hardly remember the surface.

He wanted to laugh at the absurdity of it all, but all that escaped him were the tears that burned in his eyes. His vision blurred, and he blinked them away, desperate to hold onto some semblance of dignity even in this moment of utter defeat.

Of course, he thought bitterly, this was always the ending he was meant to face. Love was never meant for him; it was a fleeting dream, always out of reach. A pitiful smile formed on his lips, a mask for the agony lurking beneath. He had tried to change his fate, to be someone who deserved happiness, but here he was—alone once again, staring at the wreckage of what could have been.

"Thank you for the love, Lila." The words felt like shards of glass as he spoke them, but they were the only ones that came to mind at that moment. He had thought she loved him, and for that, he loved her fiercely—more fiercely than he had ever loved anyone. It felt like it had been just the two of them against the world for so long like they shared a bond that no one else could understand. They were two broken pieces that fit together, or so he thought.
