Let's discuss the title.
Addison
"Matt, who's that woman?"
Summer had finally arrived, and Vanessa was once again home for break.
No avoiding me now. With her back in Connecticut, it was the perfect opportunity to expose whatever secrets she had been hiding.
She and I were gathered at Matt's house for a barbeque picnic hosted by his father. Tim had invited along several of his work colleagues and their wives, but it was one woman with short brunette hair who caught my eye.
She had arrived solo and was chatting up Matt's dad in front of the bonfire. Matt joined me at the kitchen window, and we watched while Tim and the mysterious guest exchanged peals of laughter.
He immediately frowned. "I have no idea. I've never seen her before."
I glanced over at my friend, a smile tugging at my mouth. "Well, it appears that 'Ol Timmy boy has the hots for her."
The smirk immediately died on my lips as his somber expression morphed into a scowl. "No, he doesn't," he quickly countered. "My dad doesn't date. He still loves my mom."
He turned away from the window and began silently washing the dishes that were rapidly stacking up in the sink. I studied the pair, and it was obvious to even those with the poorest of vision that Tim appeared to be immensely enjoying what the woman had to say.
But Matt didn't seem so eager to play matchmaker. If it was true what he had stated and his father hadn't dated anyone throughout the years, then it would no doubt be a struggle for him to witness if it inevitably did occur.
"You're probably right," I agreed. "I'm sure she's just a fantastic storyteller."
He nodded, but I couldn't help but notice his repeated dark gazes out the window.
"It's definitely possible for a man and woman to be platonic friends," I carried on.
I gestured at Matt. "Take a look at you and me for example. You haven't attempted to bed me yet."
Stop talking, Addie. You're not making it any better.
He raised an eyebrow at me but didn't say anything. And Vanessa, who had been messaging on her phone nonstop and hardly paying any attention to us, finally glanced up.
"Matt, can you go outside and score us some of those chocolate chip brownies I saw Karen arrive with?" She set down her cell and slid me a nasty glare.
I sneered at her right back.
He came up from behind where she was sitting at the kitchen island, sliding his arms around her waist. It didn't go unnoticed to me that she quickly flipped her phone face down as he approached.
"She'll probably reprimand me for spoiling our dinner, but I'll just tell her that you can have dessert anytime you want," he murmured, giving her a smooch on the cheek. "In fact, why don't we go up to my room, and I'll give you something sweet right now, honey?"
I rolled my eyes.
How lovely, I thought bitterly. I've forgotten what a blast it is to be around them.
He morphed into the corniest sap of a man, and she soaked it up. Except on that particular day. She seemed about as grossed out by his comment as I was.
Vanessa laughed weakly, tilting her head away from his lips as he attempted to go back in for more kisses. "I'll remember that but for now, brownies?" She gave him a hopeful look.
