Chapter 1: LA? More Like ZA

I can hear my breathing and its heavy I can't see anything or anyone for miles. I can't even see my own hand in front of my face, but I know something is there. Then I turn ever so slightly to my right and I see Ryan just standing there. I want to yell at him to come here, but I know he can't see me. I don't want to risk anything finding me yet I know he's looking for me. I start to say something but then he gets knocked down to the ground by something. All in a matter of seconds. I couldn't believe my eyes I could see his face being ripped apart piece by piece and then another one of those things comes toward him and starts at his stomach. I couldn't keep looking, I turned and a tear slowly ran down my face. I started walking toward an open door before I could even notice it, I accidentally kicked a bottle and it shattered against the wall. With a quick snap toward me the monsters came running toward me and they seem to be running at the speed of light but I'm too late. I reach the door and I turn the handle slowly, my hands shaking. I dont know whats behind this door. I opened it and I flew back some force had mnocked me down and everything went black.

I scream and realize that I'm fine and I'm safe in my bed. "Just another nightmare" I whispered to myself as I'm trying to catch my breath. just as I started to calm down my mom ran into my room "honey are you okay? I heard you scream " I wiped my eyes "yeah mom I'm fine it was just a nightmare" she sighed "okay honey just go back to sleep okay" I nodded and closed my eyes she kissed my forehead and walked out of my room. The next twenty minutes was difficult to fall back asleep so instead i just pull out my IPhone and check for any messages. As most kids now a days do all the time. After about fifteen minutes i find it hard to keep my eyes open. I set my phone on my nightstand and i turn around. Next thing i know my eyelids get heavier and heavier until i fall asleep.

I wake and look at my alarm clock. Its 8:22 AM. Oh no im going to be late for school. I rush out of my sheets and quickly slip on a flowery design top and skinny jeans. I run downstairs and grab my backpack and a granola bar. I reach the door when my mom shouts "Cassie Jane Johnson! Where in gods name do you think your going?" i have a stunned look on my face as i turn around. "Umm, to school?" My mom grabs my ear and pulls me towards her. "Today is Saturday! And your not going anywhere, go back to bed and dont let me catch you sneaking out again!" I slumped my backpack down on the floor and dragged myself upstairs with my face puzzled. "Well that explains why my alarm never went off" i whispered to myself.

When i wake up i get up in bed and rub my eyes. I stand up and sneak to the hallway. Empty. I sneak down the stairs and peek around the corner. I see my mom watching the news with a cup of coffee in her hand. My dad, well i never met him. All i know is he was in the military, mom says he died in war but i dont know anything. I casually walk up to her and sit in the seat next to her. "So whats on TV?" i asked. "The news theres some sort of 24 hour virus going on" i then glue my eyes to the TV. Ive been interested in mysteries and unanswered things all my life. The news announcer started talking "There has been a new strain of Rabies that mixed with a new virus H7G32 or Rebadia. CDC has said that it is being kept under control and has flu like symptoms. As long as you wash your hands and keep clean you should have nothing to worry about." I wonder if its something that we should be worried about. I turn the TV on mute and turn toward my mom. "Look mom im sorry about this morning, i swear i didn't know today was Saturday and i was gunna go to school" she looked at me and grunted. I knew she was upset so i just went to my room. When i reached it i got on my phone and texted Derick my best friend. "Hey, i really wanna talk to you. Can we hang at the park?" i turned off my phone and looked at the ceiling. I've seen so many disaster movies where there's a new virus and stuff goes down and then boom an apocolypse. But this couldnt be like that. Those are only fiction, right? I came back to reality when my phone beeped.

I came back to reality when my phone beeped. It was Derick, "Yea be there in five, see ya soon" i grabbed my phone and went downstairs and grabbed a granola bar to snack on. I shouted into the living room "mom im going to the park with Derick ill be back home later!" i opened the door and walked out. Oh what a beautiful day it was the sun out and a nice breeze. What a perfect day to be in California. I opened up my granola bar and started to eat it. By the time i reach the park the granola bar is well gone. I go to my favorite tree where Derick is waiting for me. "Hey Derick! Have you heard the news?" he slumped down next to me "yea that new virus! I dont think its anything big" i shrugged. "Yea but do you think we should be worried at all" as soon as these words came out of my mouth i realized how stupid it sounded. "Yea nevermind that was a dumb thing to say we should worry about it" he just looked at me and said "is there something wrong?" i nodded no and i started a sentence "well...you know ryan? I've kinda been crushing on him and i dont know how to tell him" he started laughing. "What im serious!" he slowly stopped until he was down to his last giggle. "Ok well thats easy ill tell him for you" he pulled out his phone and texted and put it away. There was a moment of silence, but was soon disrupted by his phone going off. "Okay nothing to worry about" he smiled " well i got to go, important phone call, im so sorry ill make it up to you i promise, ill see you at school" i waved goodbye and sat in silence for a while. After twenty minutes of thinking in way over my head i headed back home.

I opened the door and called out to my mom "Mom im home!" i checked my phone again for any new messages, nothing, so i just put my phone on the counter and sat on the couch. I was about to turn on the TV when i noticed it sure was awfully quiet around here. She didnt say anything so i looked around and i found her coffee cup on the floor. My heart started beating fast, i grabbed a knife in case its a burglar and then I ran upstairs and went to her bedroom, i found her lying on the ground and tears started forming and i started to scream. I couldnt think, i didnt know what to do so i decided i need to call an ambulance. She was had foam coming out of her mouth so i needed to hurry, I reached for my phone but i remembered it was downstairs. I got up and ran to it as fast as i could. I dialed 911 and when i was about to put it up to my face something grabbed my shoulder and i got a sudden tingle throughout my body i spun around to see my mom with bright glowing red eyes about to bite right into my face.
