Tom leaned against the edge of his desk, his phone pressed to his ear. The city’s night lights flickered outside the window, casting long shadows across his office. Rico’s voice came through the line, tense but steady.
“Russo’s men have been poking around,” Rico said. “They’re asking too many questions about the docks and the new shipment. They haven’t made any moves yet, but something’s off. It feels like they’re planning something bigger.”
Tom’s eyes narrowed as he absorbed the information. Tonny Russo had always been a thorn in his side—a powerful competitor with too many connections and too few boundaries. But if Tonny’s men were sniffing around, it meant one thing: the delicate balance of power between them was tipping.
“Keep an eye on them,” Tom instructed, his voice low and measured. “I want to know every move they make.” He hung up the phone, his mind racing.
The night had started with Anna—her charm, her passion, her easy laughter—but now, the reality of his world was crashing back down on him. He couldn’t afford to be distracted. Not with Russo lurking in the background, and certainly not with a shipment that could make or break his empire. He ran a hand through his hair, straightened his suit, and made a mental note to keep Anna separate from the chaos for now. As much as she intrigued him, his empire came first.
Across the city, Anna was still buzzing from her evening with Tom. The elegance of his penthouse, his surprisingly deep knowledge of art, and the revelation that he owned some of her earlier pieces had left her reeling. She hadn’t expected to feel such a connection with someone so different from her usual circle. As she sat in her cozy apartment, sketching aimlessly, her thoughts kept drifting back to Tom. His presence had a strange effect on her—both calming and electrifying. There was something about him that pulled her in, yet a small voice in the back of her mind warned her to be careful. She couldn’t quite put her finger on it, but there was a darkness behind his eyes that made her wonder who he really was. Still, the idea of seeing him again made her heart race.
Back in the underworld, Tom’s attention had fully shifted to his next problem: Tonny Russo. Russo was no ordinary criminal. He had started from nothing, crawling his way to the top of the food chain with brutal efficiency. His reputation as a ruthless, calculated mob boss preceded him, and he had long been a rival in the same black-market trades as Tom. While their paths had crossed before, they had always maintained a careful distance—until now. Tonny had grown increasingly ambitious over the past few months, and Tom knew he was preparing to strike. He could feel it in the air, in the quiet movements of Russo’s men, and in the sudden whispers at the docks. It wasn’t long before Tom and Russo were standing face to face. A dimly lit warehouse by the waterfront was their meeting ground. Tom’s men stood by the entrance, watching the docks for any signs of trouble, while Rico hung back, ever vigilant. Tom stood calmly in the middle of the room, his hands casually tucked into his pockets, but his sharp gaze never left the shadowed figure approaching him. Tonny Russo emerged from the darkness, flanked by two of his muscle-bound bodyguards. His slicked-back hair, designer suit, and confident smirk gave him the air of someone who was used to getting exactly what he wanted.
“Delano,” Russo greeted, his voice dripping with arrogance.
“I heard you’ve been making moves. Figured we should talk.” Tom didn’t flinch. He maintained his cool, stepping forward with the poise of a man who knew the game as well as anyone. “You’ve been asking questions you shouldn’t be, Russo. Care to explain?”
Russo chuckled, a low, sinister sound. “Oh, come on. We both know how this works. We keep our distance, but sometimes lines get crossed. It’s just business, Tom.”
“Business,” Tom echoed, his tone neutral but laced with a warning. “Is that what you call trying to sabotage my shipments?”
Russo’s smile faded slightly, his eyes flashing with a dangerous edge. “Let’s just say I’m tired of playing second fiddle. Your empire has grown too comfortable. I think it’s time we level the playing field.”
