Prologue

"Lila!"

Blink. "Lila!"

Lila's eyes fluttered open.

She looked around blearily wondering where she was. Then it all hit her once gain. Lila stretched and sat up. She prayed and then sat on the edge of her bed, staring at the half-packed suitcase in front of her. The room was mostly bare now, just like the ones before it had been. Another move. Another town. Another identity. Her fingers fidgeted with the zipper of her bag, the quiet hum of her dad cooking downstairs drifting up through the floorboards. It was supposed to be comforting, the smell of breakfast filling the house, but this morning it only made her feel more unsettled.

She was leaving again. They were leaving again.

She ran her hands through her long, dark hair and leaned back against the wall, staring up at the ceiling. She tried to remember how many times they'd done this now. Three times in the past two years, or was it four? It all blurred together in her head. This time she was going to be Lila Brooks. Before that, she had been Lila Matthews. She didn't even know who she really was anymore. Why do we have to? She had asked.
