The path through the forest was slick with rain, the undergrowth thick and wild. Jian Yu and Yin Mei moved in silence, the steady patter of raindrops against the leaves masking their footsteps. It was as if the world itself was holding its breath, waiting for the storm to break.
Jian Yu's thoughts wandered as he followed Yin Mei's lead. The woman walking beside him was no longer the carefree, mischievous companion of his past. Her presence now was quiet and calculating, like the eye of a storm-dangerous, unpredictable. And yet, despite the distance time had placed between them, he couldn't help but feel a pull toward the familiar.
"Yin Mei," he called out softly, his voice cutting through the rain.
She didn't turn to face him but slowed her pace, allowing him to catch up. "What is it?"
"Why didn't you come to me earlier?" he asked, his tone light but laced with genuine curiosity. "If this is as important as you say, why wait until now?"
Yin Mei's eyes flickered with something unreadable as she glanced sideways at him. "You were gone, Jian Yu. Vanished without a trace. I searched, but you didn't want to be found."
Jian Yu exhaled slowly. He had no easy answer for that. "Maybe I needed to be gone for a while. There were... things I had to figure out."
"And did you?" Her question came quick, like an arrow fired without hesitation.
He smiled faintly. "I'd like to think I'm getting there. But enough about me. What about you? What have you been doing all these years?"
Yin Mei's expression hardened slightly. "Surviving."
Jian Yu felt the weight of that single word. He knew better than to pry. The world they lived in was not kind to those who let their guard down, especially for someone like Yin Mei, who had always danced on the edge of danger. But surviving wasn't the same as living. He wondered what she had sacrificed to get where she was now.
As the trees thinned out, they found themselves standing at the base of a towering cliff. A waterfall cascaded down from the heights above, its roar filling the air. Yin Mei stepped forward and traced her fingers along the moss-covered rocks, her eyes narrowing in concentration.
"Here," she said quietly, her voice barely audible over the sound of the water. "This is the entrance."
Jian Yu squinted, searching for any sign of a passage. To the untrained eye, the cliff appeared solid, impenetrable. But Yin Mei had a way of seeing what others couldn't. She pressed her palm against the stone, and with a soft rumble, the rocks shifted, revealing a narrow, hidden tunnel that led into the mountain.
He chuckled. "You always were good at finding the secret doors."
Yin Mei glanced at him, her expression neutral. "I've had a lot of practice."
Without another word, she stepped into the tunnel, and Jian Yu followed close behind. The darkness swallowed them whole, the sound of the waterfall fading into a distant memory. The passage was narrow, barely wide enough for two people to walk side by side, and the air was thick with the scent of damp earth and stone.
As they walked deeper into the mountain, Jian Yu's thoughts returned to the seal. He had always known it was valuable-powerful, even-but Yin Mei's warnings had made it clear that it was far more dangerous than he had imagined. And if ancient forces were moving to claim it, then the entire balance of the martial world was at risk.
He broke the silence with a quiet question. "This seal... what makes it so important? I know it has power, but what are they really after?"
Yin Mei's footsteps slowed for a moment before she answered. "The seal is more than just a tool of power. It's a key. A key to something older than the sects, older than the clans. Something buried deep in the earth, waiting to be unlocked."
