The joyous squeals of children playing filled the wide open space outside. I stood on the well-manicured backyard of my brother's billionaire ex. She had hybrid grass, a nice mixture of turf and grass. It seemed to make her lawn greener and slip-free, the perfect place for children to wear their high energy out. My nieces and nephew took full advantage, chasing each other around for a game of "Tag, you're it!" Lucia and I exchanged genuine smiles. It was nearly impossible not to fall victim to the positive energy in the air. I knew I would put a damper on her mood with what I came to inquire about.
Lucia and I never had any kind of issues. My brother, however, bumped heads with Royalty's mom on a weekly basis. She was growing tired of Kain not compromising or considering her. I sympathized with the famous designer because Kain wasn't the easiest man to get along with. Monogamy was his kryptonite. He was a proud polygamist and misogynist. His relationship with women was complex. He couldn't live without them as a Heterosexual male, but my brother struggled with understanding them, too.
"Summer has hit us early this year, huh?" I broke the silence between us awkwardly, keeping my gaze fixed on the kids playing. Lucia had two children by her fiancé. I didn't care too much for him, but I considered the kids to be family like Royalty. The intuitive woman turned her front towards my side. Her eyes were boring holes in my skin and incriminating me already. "Ebel, what does he want?" A series of nervous chuckles parted from my lips. The sun had been beaming down on us the entire time, but I didn't break a sweat until now. "W-What? Lucia," Kissing my teeth, I nudged her playfully. "Come on. Why do you always think he has to want something from you when I show up? M-Maybe I just want to see my nieces and nephew-"
"Ebel, what does he want?" The calm tone paired with her persistence conveyed that her patience was wearing thin. A large sigh blew from my mouth, and I dropped my head in shame, mumbling the request. "We have a joint tour coming up for the summer, and he wants to bring Royalty-" I couldn't get it out fully before she rejected the idea. "No"
Lucia spun around and flounced into the house. I matched her speed, jogging behind her. "Lucia, I'll be there to make sure she's okay. I-" Our bodies clashed due to a swift, unexpected turn from her. I stepped back to give the fiery woman some space. "You shouldn't always be the one that's there for her, Ebel. You have two kids of your own. That nigga who looks like you, but acts like a jackass should be the one taking care of his daughter. He swears he loves her, and I know he does, but how much? Enough to make him keep random strange bitches from around my fucking daughter? I think not"
My brain scrambled to find a counterargument, something, anything to use as a defense for my brother. My mind went totally blank. She knew him better than all the other women he messed with. I couldn't argue with the truth. "Lucia, I will make sure she is on my bus with Lovely and Aeko. Nari agreed to come on tour with me. It's a summer tour. Royalty won't be in school. You know she's addicted to Instagram. How do you think she's going to feel, watching her father and her cousins having fun on tour without her? She's about to turn nine in a few days. Do you want to ruin her birthday with this news, Lucia?"
