Chapter 2. What it takes to be a Hero.
Kaye's keys jingle as she pulls them out of her bag to unlock her front door. She takes a deep breath before heading inside. She can immediately hear footsteps coming her way as she slides off her sneakers.
"Hey, baby! Why are you home so la-oh holy shit! Your hair is a mess love!" Kaye tried to move past her dad but it was hard when he was trying to detangle her hair with his fingers.
"How come you always look so disheveled after training with Magnum? Ya'll gettin' hot now that you're eighteen?" Eric teases but Kaye looks back at her father in bewilderment. Her face was bright red and she finally managed to remove his hands from her hair.
"Don't ever suggest anything like that ever again. He's like another parent to me."
Eric chuckles behind his palm. "Another dad? I guess your father and I have room in our bed for one more. Ouh how exciting!" Steam flows from Kaye's ears. Deciding to remove herself from this conversation she flies out of the foyer and into the living room where her father Andrew sits in a recliner playing solitaire on his phone.
"Hey darling, how was training?" Andrew asks with his eyes still glued to his phone. Kaye sighs and takes a seat on the plush cream-colored couch.
"Draining. I tried a combo for Blazing Shot."
"Combo?"
"I combined my magma and flames into one shot," Kaye said as she leaned into the comfort of the couch.
"Impressive..." Andrew looked up and saw the mess on Kaye's head. "You sleeping with your teach or something?"
Appalled, Kaye removes her sock and launches it at her father's head. He laughs and throws the sock back with twice as much force.
"What is wrong with you guys? Disgusting!"
"I couldn't help myself. I heard Dad teasing you." Kaye groans and shoves her red face into her hands.
"Dinner's ready!" Eric calls out. Kaye's stomach growls, she was so distracted she didn't even notice the smell of something cooking. She dragged herself off the couch and flew toward the kitchen, where Eric was plating a homemade pot roast.
"It smells so good," Kaye said, taking a seat as Eric beamed with pride.
Andrew put his phone away and joined them, still chuckling at the earlier banter. The room was filled with the clinking of utensils and the warm, savory aroma of dinner. For a while, they ate in comfortable silence, the day's fatigue slowly melting away with each bite.
Kaye couldn't ignore the weight in her chest. Her thoughts kept drifting back to her training with Magnum. The longer she waited, the heavier the weight felt. She glanced up at her parents, the people who had always supported her, who were now laughing over something trivial.
She took a deep breath, steeling herself. "I need to tell you guys something," Kaye said, her voice cutting through the lighthearted chatter. Both Eric and Andrew looked at her, the smiles fading from their faces as they sensed the seriousness in her tone.
"What's wrong, love?" Eric asked, his playful demeanor replaced by concern.
Kaye hesitated, her fingers tightening around her fork. "Magnum... he told me today that All Might has taken an interest in my progress."
Andrew's brow furrowed, his fork pausing mid-air. "All Might? As in... the All Might from Japan?"
Kaye nodded, her heart pounding in her chest. "Yeah, he's been watching my training for a while now, and... he made an offer."
