Olivia couldn’t sleep. The warmth of her bed, unusual for the typically cool nights of Waterbury, CT, seemed to suffocate her, making her feel restless. She tossed and turned, her thoughts relentlessly circling the kiss—the kiss—that she and Madison had shared. Over and over, she replayed the moment: the softness of Madison's lips, the tentative touch of her hand, the sweetness that had lingered long after they pulled away. But with each replay came a gnawing doubt.

What if Madison was just playing with her?

That thought pierced through Olivia like a cold blade, making her curl tighter around her teddy bear. Tears pricked at the corners of her eyes. She squeezed her eyes shut, burying her face into the worn, plush fabric of the bear’s head, her breaths ragged and shaky. The familiar scent of her room—lavender and old paperbacks—usually a comfort, now felt stifling. The walls seemed to close in, amplifying her anxieties.

What if Madison doesn’t really love me? Olivia’s tears fell freely now, hot and silent as they soaked into her pillow. She clutched the teddy bear tighter, her mind scrambling for some way to silence the doubts. She tried to laugh through the tears, forcing herself to focus on the cute, silly nickname Madison had given her—“Livvy Bear.”

She giggled weakly, the sound a strange mixture of joy and sadness. "Maddie Bear..." Olivia whispered the name into her pillow, closing her eyes and pretending the teddy bear she hugged was Madison. The thought gave her a fleeting sense of peace, as if Madison’s arms were wrapped around her instead. She could still feel the warmth of Madison's lips, a mix of sweetness and nervousness, echoing in her every thought, stirring emotions she had never fully allowed herself to feel before.

As her tears dried, Olivia sat up in bed, wiping her face with the back of her hand. The room was bathed in soft moonlight that filtered through the half-open curtains, casting shadows across her walls. The clock on her nightstand read 3:27 AM, but Olivia wasn’t tired. Not even close. Her heart still raced with an uncertain mix of hope and fear, pulling her thoughts back to Madison.

She reached under her bed and pulled out the letters, the ones that Madison had written—those strange, obsessive, yet tender love letters. She held them in her hands for a moment, feeling the weight of Madison’s words. The paper was worn at the edges from the many times she’d read them, but Olivia couldn’t resist reading them again. She unfolded the first letter, the familiar handwriting jumping off the page, and with each word, she felt her heart swell a little more.

Madison had stalked her, yes. That fact should’ve sent Olivia running. But somehow, it didn’t. Instead, it felt... oddly sweet. Olivia tried to rationalize it. It’s not like she’s dangerous, right? She just... cared that much about me. Olivia smiled softly at the thought. The vulnerability that Madison had shown in admitting it made Olivia’s heart soften.

But still, there was that nagging fear. Was it real? Was it all just some twisted game to her?

The sun crept through her curtains too soon. The pale morning light filled her room, but it did nothing to quell the nerves bubbling inside her. Olivia had barely slept, her mind too busy trying to figure out how to feel, what to do. Her phone lay untouched on the nightstand. She hadn’t summoned the courage to text Madison since Friday night. The uncertainty gnawed at her, but she couldn’t bring herself to bridge the gap just yet.

Monday morning had arrived with a sense of inevitability. Olivia dragged herself out of bed, dressed in her usual hoodie and jeans, and left the house without breakfast. The air outside felt sharp, cool, and crisp, a stark contrast to the restless heat she had felt all night. As she walked toward Keene Central High School, the old brick building looming in the distance, her stomach churned with anxiety.
