Kira's POV.
"How long do you think we've been here?" I asked my mother, my voice barely a whisper.
Her voice sounded hoarse when she replied. "Maybe about an hour."
I blew out a breath. I was getting bored and restless, and the wolfsbane in the air was burning my lungs.
I started to cough.
"Hang in there, Kira."
I was trying, but I didn't think I could survive for long.
My mother was used to wolfsbane in her system, I wasn't, which meant that it will affect me more than her.
My eyes started to droop and I was losing consciousness. "Mom." I whispered.
"Kira." My mother held me tight. "I think it's safer to stay in the garden until─"
Just then the door opened.
"Kira." I heard Lucien say. "What happened?"
"What happened?" My mother scoffed. "Did you forget that there's wolfsbane in here? Didn't it occur to you that it will hurt her? What if..." My mother's voice drained out as my vision blurred.
I felt a pair of strong arms carry me out of the room.
"Lucien." I whispered, clutching onto his shirt.
"I'm so sorry, little wolf." He sounded pained and hurt. I managed to bring my hand to his face, cupping it and caressing his scar.
"It's okay." And just like that, I slipped into darkness.
☘
Soft hands caressed my face, brushing my hair back. My eyes fluttered open, revealing my mother sitting next to me."Oh, Kira." She kissed my forehead. "Thank god, you're awake."
What happened?
Where's Lucien?
My head was all over the place, but then things started to fall back into place after I regained my full consciousness.
Someone attacking the shield. The secret room. The secret garden. Wolfsbane.
"Where's Lucien?" I asked my mother, getting a frown from her.
"He's in his office."
Getting up, I used my arms to lift myself and get off the bed. I realised we were in my bedroom.
My mother held my arm. "Where are you going?"
"I want to go see him."
My mother shook her head. "No. You need to rest. He should be the one checking on you. Not the other way around."
"Mom. Please. Lucien is not like Zade." I didn't know why I said that and I instantly regretted it.
My mother swallowed, letting go of my arm. "I'm going outside for some air."
I wanted to apologize, but I couldn't right now. What I did was wrong, yes, but I didn't like people talking ill of my mate. I felt... protective over him.
As I walked through the hallways, I realised I was dressed in a shirt and shorts. I had no shoes, which didn't really bother me.
His office came into view, but before I knocked on the door, I heard Lucien say something to someone. "Plans didn't change."
"Well, certainly they have to, considering that imbecile is back in the picture." Vlad spoke. I didn't know he was back so soon. How long was I asleep?
