My life has always been ordinary, I've always been neutral. I never liked to stand out in a crowd, and I'm not what you would call a "social person". And that's how I like it, being alone is where I feel most at home. It's peaceful, quiet, and pleasant. That's how I live, or did, that was until today. I'm sorry, let's go back a little bit.

9:17 a.m. 12 hours ago

"STOKE! GET OUT OF BED!" Uhhhgg... Why is she yelling? Did I forget to take the trash out to the road this morning? Wait, it's not trash day.

The door swung open and–SLAM! "Why are you still in bed!? You're running late!" Oh yeah, that's my Mom.

"...Since when do I ever run?"

"This is no time to joke around!" Bringing one hand up to her forehead, she gave a tired sigh that made her loosen up. "Come on Stoke, this is a new school and I want you to make a good impression. The school's director is even wanting to meet with you personally. He's been waiting for over an hour now down the road at our neighbor's house. The only reason I'm waking you up now is because I assumed you were already there!" She pulled out her phone and held it up to my squinting face. "I only noticed because he had just contacted me. So, I need you to try, ok?"

Try? Why should I? It's not like anything life-changing has ever happened when I do try. You see, in the Paldea region where I live, once you turn thirteen, you have the choice to get a starter Pokémon. My Mom urged me to get one, but I never saw the appeal. It seemed like a lot of work taking care of a pokémon, and my Mom thought I should have a companion; but, like I said, I prefer being alone. Plus, I really think she was just trying to get me out of the house faster.

I guess it couldn't hurt. Plus, after I'm done, she'll probably leave me alone and be satisfied. "...Fine, I'll try to try..."

She showed some relief with a quick prayer to Arceus, then clapped her hands together somehow infusing it with the sound of enthusiasm. "Great! Like I said, the school director is waiting for you down the street at our neighbor's house. The student who lives there happens to be the student president."

"Wait, I have to meet up with more than one person?" I turned around, but she was already out the door. With an idle sigh, I threw on some clothes that I left on the floor, fixed my hair, and walked out the door. Little did I know, I wouldn't be back in a long time.

Knock knock knock. Is it too late to turn around?

The door to my neighbor's "house", if that's what you want to call a three-story mansion, opened up, and standing at the entrance was an old man in a blue jacket, white pants, and glasses. He had white hair and a goatee. "Good morning Stoke, my name is Director Clavell. It's nice to finally meet you."

Guess it's too late to turn around now. He looks like he might be, what, a hundred-sixty? "...Hey."

"Please, come in. There are several matters I must discuss with you."

Inside the home's front entrance was a large, extravagant room filled with lavish furniture. In the center of the room, a large white crystal chandelier hung from the ceiling. Two white couches were placed opposite of each other and they faced a glass table that served as the heart of the room. On both sides of the lodging, staircases were merged into the walls that led up to the second and third floors of the house.
