This is a close-up of Mateo. Hope u enjoy reading. I'll try to update once every 3 weeks :3
Lancy's POV
"You remind me of someone I knew." I kept thinking of her words again and again. Who did I remind her of? Could I possibly know her? These were the questions that were replaying in my head over and over.
Now I regret not asking for her name or why she was in that wagon, but I should focus on the situation at hand. For example, where I am and what am I doing in a smelly basement with only a sack cloth and a rotten orange. I searched my mind for every possible answer I could think of.
Then it clicked.
"Am I here because of the exchange thing?" I asked myself, partially not believing the situation I'm currently in. Thinking back to what the alpha and beta were saying, the realization that I was one of the people they listed for the exchange hit me. Everything was aligning, but no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't wrap my head around why they choose to ambush me in the alpha's office, and not in the wild while searching for food with no threat of witnesses.
When I came back from my spiral of depression and failed analysis, I realized that I couldn't sense my wolf anymore. "Great." I said in frustration of my situation and partially of myself. Luck just seems to be laughing at me right now.
"Just when I thought things couldn't get any worse," I mumbled. While I was wallowing in self-pity, I heard a knock on my door. As it creaked open, I held my breath, slightly terrified of what stood at the other side.
When there was a generous amount of space between the door and its frame, a head peeked through, and someone slowly emerged from the door and entered the room at an irritatingly slow pace, but the real surprise was when I saw who the person was.
It was...
Mateo's POV
As I was in my room waiting for the sun to go down, I was drowning in my thoughts, trying to figure out the cause of that sudden feeling when I heard someone knock on my door. Ignoring it, I decided that taking a shower was the best way to spend the time I had at hand, and it would also get the rouge's blood off me.
The knock came again. Slightly annoyed at this point, I went to check who it was. Opening my door, I was ready to shout at the person on the other side for disturbing me, but when I saw the person on the other side, I decided against it.
"Sup, bro." My brother, Alexander greeted, sounding slightly pleased with himself when he saw the look on my face.
"Hello. Now get out." I said, irritation evident in my tone. Alex was one of my brothers, he is about two years younger than me with dark brown hair, grey eyes which has a hint of jade, and similar facial features as mine, but being one of my younger brothers, he inherited the ability to be obnoxiously annoying without even trying.
I envy him though, because even though he is younger than me, he found his mate when he turned 19, and now him being 20 he has been with her for a year while I haven't even found mine.
"What are you even doing here?" I inquired, hoping the hostility on my face would get my message across without having to chase him out of my room.
"Took you long enough to ask." He said smugly, and I was getting ready to wipe that smile off his face before he said,
"Papa told me to get you for dinner."
At dinner, the table was set up neater than I've ever seen it, with six seats for my dad, Papa, two brothers, sister, and my brother's mate. My Mom was an omega. Hence, even though he is a male, he can give birth. While in the middle of eating, I decided to bring up the question that was in my mind for the entire afternoon.
"Dad, when you were the alpha, could you feel the emotions of others?" My dad seemed taken aback by my question, then he said, "Well, you can only do that when I give you full control of the pack. Which I haven't, or... when... " He trailed off, and he looked like he was still processing some information.
Then my Mom and brothers exclaimed out of the blue. "Finally!" I being perplexed, looked around the table hoping for someone to clarify instead of sudden exclamations, but that's when my Dad explained that it's a mechanic werewolves had, which when mates haven't found each other in under one year they can sense each others feelings. Then my Mom chimed in, "And this can only happen if they're in a certain proximity away from you or in your territory."
It was when they finished explaining that me and my wolf and I started to process the fact that our mate is in this continent. When I realized the situation, I got up from the dining table calmly. Then, I practically bolted to the door, but my father stopped me, saying I should make a search party tomorrow or maybe host a ball for every potential candidate.
The first option sounded much less tiring, but I chose the latter because then she/he could be introduced to the family in the most lavish way possible. After the talk, I told my beta to get to work sending invitations to alphas who have children of age.
??? POV
The thought of living wasn't always motivating, but the drive for revenge always fueled me during my darkest times. Like the very fact that they're living comfortably after what they did to me makes my blood boil.
How dare they be happy when they took my only source of happiness? How dare they move on? Did they think they could take what was mine with no consequences?
Patience. All in due time.
For now, unfortunately, I have to work from the shadows.
When the time comes, I will take back what was rightfully mine. Whether they like it or not. At least now I have a key playing, right... into... my... grasp.
