“They are mine to protect. Those who even think of erasing them from this world will have to face my wrath,” his voice rang out loud, cold, and unforgiving. It wasn’t just a warning. It was a promise.
His lotus-shaped brown eyes, once warm and filled with kindness, now held a biting frost. They scanned the room, expressionless and steely. But for a fleeting second, when they landed on me, they softened just a flicker of the man I once knew. Then, just as quickly, the mask returned, emotionless and distant.
The man who stood before me was not the benevolent Nine-Tailed Fox King I once adored. Gone was the ruler loved and cherished for his generosity, his heart of gold that beat for his people.
No.
The man standing here now was the Yiliang Patriarch the unwavering protector of justice, an impenetrable fortress of resolve. He had made the decision to safeguard a kingdom, an outcast kingdom, abandoned and ridiculed by the rest of the royal world.
As I watched him stride out of the Royal meeting hall, something in me stirred a need, a pull. I had to follow him. My instincts told me that he was waiting, and I was right. Beneath the sprawling branches of a sacred willow tree, there he stood, silent and still as a statue, waiting for me.
“Do you believe in me?” His voice was quiet now, but the question struck me with unexpected force. It felt like the air had been sucked from my lungs.
My heart ached to answer, The only man I’ve ever trusted, the only one I’ve ever believed in... is you, my love. But the words tangled in my throat, strangled by fear. Instead, I averted my gaze, unable to meet his piercing eyes.
He exhaled, a sound heavy with weariness. “I don’t care what they think. I don’t care what they say about me. But you, Lan Zhan... you, I care about. What you think, what you say—it matters. Because I’ve always seen you as my soulmate.”
I gasped, my heart pounding against my ribcage as those words fell from his lips. The weight of them hit me like a tidal wave, pulling me under.
“I still am... love,” I whispered into the wind, my voice barely audible as it trembled. But it was too late. He had already vanished, slipping away like a ghost in the night.
And I was left standing there, alone beneath the same tree where we had once shared dreams of a future that no longer existed.
