Mark had heard it all before.
"Come on, it'll be fun!" his wife, Lisa, chimed for what felt like the thousandth time. "You deserve to relax. And a mani-pedi will do wonders for you."
For months, she had been trying to convince him to join her on one of her regular spa trips. Each time, Mark would find some excuse—too busy with work, errands, or just not in the mood. But today, after a grueling week and sheer exhaustion, he couldn't muster the energy to resist any longer.
"Fine, I'll go," Mark mumbled, rubbing his tired eyes. "But just this once."
Lisa lit up like a kid at Christmas. "You won't regret it! It'll be nice and relaxing. You'll see!"
The spa was a cozy, fragrant little place with soothing music playing in the background. As soon as they walked in, Lisa greeted the salon workers like old friends. Mark, however, was out of his element. The cushioned chairs and soft towels made him feel strangely out of place, but there was no turning back now.
"Sit here, babe," Lisa said, guiding him to a plush chair. "Just relax."
Mark sunk into the seat, his body already protesting the idea of staying awake much longer. As the salon workers began to prepare the foot bath and massage oils, his eyes grew heavier and heavier. The warm water swirled around his feet, and before he knew it, a soothing massage began. His arms and legs felt like jelly.
"Ah, this isn't so bad," Mark thought, letting out a soft sigh. His body was slowly drifting into that sweet space between waking and sleep, lulled by the gentle kneading of his feet and hands. The soft chatter in the background became a distant hum. He was out cold.
Lisa, noticing her husband's deep, steady breathing, chuckled softly. He was completely asleep.
The salon lady working on his feet, Mia, glanced at Lisa with a grin. "Looks like he's really relaxed now."
Lisa smiled mischievously. "I told him it'd be relaxing." She leaned in closer to Mia and lowered her voice. "You know what would be hilarious?"
Mia raised an eyebrow, curious.
"How about we give him some... unexpected nails?" Lisa whispered, her eyes twinkling with mischief. "Long, dark blue ones—on both his hands and feet."
Mia's eyes widened before a playful smile spread across her face. "Oh, I like where you're going with this. He won't know what hit him!"
"Better make it gel too," Lisa added. "Something that lasts a while and can't just be wiped off." "And make them quite a little longer than usual," she said, stifling her giggle.
And so, while Mark remained blissfully asleep, dreaming of who-knows-what, Mia and Lisa went to work. They carefully shaped and extended his nails, turning them into elegant, feminine works of art—on both his hands and feet. They painted his fingernails and toenails with a deep, glossy navy blue gel polish, the kind that required a UV light to set and was designed to last for weeks. The contrast of the dark blue polish against his tanned skin was striking, and with the gel, the nails looked flawless and sturdy, ensuring they wouldn't come off easily.
Lisa was almost in tears from trying to hold back her laughter as Mia finished the last touch on Mark's thumb. They both stood back to admire their handiwork, the blue nails gleaming under the salon lights.
Mark stirred slightly but didn't wake. "Perfect," Lisa whispered.
After about an hour, the pampering session ended, and Lisa gently nudged Mark awake. He blinked groggily, stretching his arms. "Huh? Is it over?"
"Yup!" Lisa said cheerfully, biting her lip to keep from laughing. "How do you feel?"
"Honestly," Mark yawned, rubbing his eyes, "that was pretty nice."
He moved to get up, still half-asleep, when something shiny caught his eye. He blinked again. His hands. His feet. They were...blue.
"What the...?" Mark gawked at his long, glossy blue fingernails, then at his toes. His eyes went wide. "Lisa! What did you do?!"
Unable to contain herself any longer, Lisa burst into laughter. "Surprise! You fell asleep, and, well... we thought we'd give you a little makeover."
Mark stared in disbelief, holding up his hands to examine the extravagant blue nails. "A little makeover?" he sputtered. "I look like a superhero's sidekick!"
Lisa wiped tears from her eyes, gasping for breath between giggles. "You have to admit, they look pretty fabulous."
Mark tried to stay mad, but the ridiculousness of the situation was too much. He couldn't help but crack a smile, shaking his head. "I'm never falling asleep at the spa again."
Lisa grinned and wrapped her arm around his. "Oh, come on. You look amazing! And next time, maybe we'll go with neon pink."
Mark groaned but laughed along with her. "Next time? Oh no, you're not getting me back here."
But as they walked out of the salon, Mark couldn't help but admire his nails just a little. Then it hit him.
"Wait," he said, frowning as he held up his hands again, "this stuff is gel, isn't it? That means..."
Lisa nodded, smiling innocently. "Oh yeah. It's not coming off that easily. We're talking a good two weeks, maybe more. You're welcome."
Mark groaned again, this time louder, but deep down, he couldn't help but laugh. What had he gotten himself into?
