The night was alive with the sounds of distant explosions and the sharp crack of gunfire, a constant reminder of the war that had raged for far too long. Shadows danced across the camp, where flickering lanterns struggled to illuminate the weary faces of soldiers and medics alike. The air was thick with tension, mingling with the acrid scent of smoke and blood. Amidst the chaos, I moved through the infirmary, a sanctuary where the injured were brought in, their wounds telling stories of sacrifice and bravery.

As a nurse on the front lines, I had become accustomed to the sights and sounds of war—the cries of the wounded, the smell of blood, and the urgent whispers of those fighting for their lives. Each night, I donned my apron and set to work, mending torn flesh and comforting terrified souls. Yet, tonight, an unsettling ache settled deep in my chest, an instinctual fear that something was about to change. I pushed the thought aside, focusing on my duties, bandaging wounds and offering words of comfort to those who lay vulnerable before me.

But then the call came—a single name that shattered my composure. “The general has been hit.”

In an instant, the world blurred around me. Kellan Draegen, the man who had stolen my heart amidst the chaos, was in danger. Panic surged through me as I raced toward the field hospital, my heart pounding with dread. Memories flashed through my mind: the way Kellan’s laughter could light up the darkest days, the stolen moments that we shared in the shadows of the war, the secrets we had kept from everyone around us. Every step felt heavy, each breath a struggle against the reality I was about to face.

When I arrived, my worst fears were realized. Kellan lay on a cot, blood staining his uniform, his face pale and drawn. The strong, invincible man I adored now looked fragile, his body broken by the battlefield. It was a sight that threatened to crumble my resolve, but I refused to let despair take hold.

I pushed past the other medics, my determination unwavering. “I’m helping him,” I declared, kneeling beside him. My hands trembled as I reached for the bandages, fear and urgency propelling me forward. The world around me faded into a blur of chaos as I focused solely on Kellan, my heart racing with the need to save him.

“Don’t cry, my love… I hate it when you cry,” Kellan whispered, his voice weak but unmistakable, a flicker of warmth amidst the cold reality of his condition.

Tears streamed down my cheeks as I fought to save him, my heart aching with the weight of our secret. Our love was forbidden; soldiers were not allowed to fall in love because they needed to prioritize their duty first. This rule loomed over us like a dark cloud, but in that moment, all that mattered was Kellan’s survival.

“Stay with me, Kellan,” I urged, my hands working quickly to staunch the bleeding. I couldn’t lose him—not now, not when we had so much left unsaid. Memories of our time together flooded my mind: the stolen kisses in the quiet of night, the whispered dreams of a life beyond the war, and the promise of a future that now felt uncertain.

In a fleeting moment of vulnerability, Kellan took a piece of bandage and fashioned it into a makeshift ring, slipping it onto my finger. “I may not have a real ring yet,” he whispered, his breath shallow but steady, “but please… marry me.”

For a moment, the war around me ceased to exist. It was just the two of us. Tears streamed down my face as I looked into his eyes, knowing that, despite everything, this was the moment that mattered most.

I nodded, choking on my own words as I whispered back, “Yes. Always, yes.”

“I’ll marry you,” I whispered again, wiping away my tears with the back of my hand, “but you have to make sure that when this war ends, you’re still alive.”

He chuckled softly, though the sound was rough, his body too tired to laugh properly. “That’s a promise, then,” he said, his eyes gleaming with determination. “I’ll come back to you.”

I smiled, even though fear still gripped my heart. “You better,” I whispered, my voice thick with emotion. “I’m not marrying a ghost.”

His smile faded, replaced by a look of deep affection and something unspoken. His hand squeezed mine gently, his strength beginning to falter. “I’ll survive this,” he whispered. “For you. For us.”

I leaned down and kissed his hand, feeling the warmth of his skin beneath my lips. The world outside the tent seemed far away, but I knew that soon enough, I would have to face it again—the war, the blood, and the uncertainty of tomorrow.

As I held his hand, the chaos of the battlefield faded away, leaving only the promise of love—a love that would be tested in ways neither of us could foresee. The weight of the world pressed down around us, but in that fragile moment, we found solace in each other. In a world where everything was uncertain, we would fight for each other, risking everything to forge a future together, no matter the odds.

With the sounds of war raging around us, we clung to that promise, knowing that love could be both a sanctuary and a battleground. And as I worked to save the man I loved, I silently vowed that no matter what lay ahead, our love would be worth the fight.
