A first job

The night was dark, save for the full moon shining through layers and layers of trees. Though even with the light, the forest floor was barely visible, a steady layer of fog covering it. It was an autumn evening, and very few found themselves outside on an unpleasant night like this.

MePhone4 wasn't so lucky. Walking home from a supply run-- being the last one to wake up in the morning, and being resigned to the last task available, it was an annoying one for sure. Meeting up with a supplier in the next town over, and gathering stuff from a check-list, all to repeat almost once every month.

The robot didn't truly mind it, but he did mind the late night walks home, back to the manor he was stuck living in, deep in the woods. A breeding ground for paranoia, really. Each twig snap just being another thing to spike a certain anxiety, because deep down, through many years of being taught this, he knew he was not alone in these woods.

Surely it was only a matter of time before something jumped out at him, and it could very well be anything. Wild animal, or not.

There were a lot of sick things in this world. It frustrated MePhone, really. He had been conditioned to hate these things. It was supposed to be his job to get rid of them after all, so why should he not?

Cleansing the world by getting rid of one beast at a time. A job him and his brothers were made to do. What reason would he ever have to go against this purpose?

Though he really hoped he wouldn't have to run into one tonight. He had to finish this supply run. He had to get home, and go to bed, and hopefully his internal alarm will actually wake him up on time tomorrow, so he can do something better with his day.

But for now, he was stuck walking through the woods. The only noises filling the air were the crickets, and various bugs of the night, along with his footsteps, crunching against piles of dead leaves.

Despite the unpleasant mood that the environment was putting into the air- and despite his slight paranoia, it really wasn't that bad of a night. A little chilly, sure, but he didn't really mind that all too much. Really, it at least gave him time to think. With everyone else living in the manor, it got a bit hard to truly hear his thoughts most days.

And he didn't mean that in a way of saying he hated it there, no. He cared a lot about the people he lived with.

Even if most of them didn't really seem to like him. None of that personal stuff really mattered anyways. At least father made sure to reinforce that. The main goal was to snuff out the supernatural. Not focus on building a social life.

That was how it's always been, and will continue to be. He was built for a reason, after all.

After a lot of walking, he was brought out of his thoughts by a new noise. A twig snapping.

Normally, it could be excused as some wild animal, but the noise registered above him.

He was quick to look up, immediately jumping out of the way as one of the tree branches from way up high fell to the ground. A big, long branch that wouldn't have just simply fell on its own, surely. This, of course, only served to put him on edge. How embarrassing would it be to fail something as simple as a supply run?

MePhone just quickened his pace a bit after shaking off his nerves. Despite the fog, he was familiar enough with the vast forest that surrounded the manor he lived in. He knew he was close, and it would be nice for that to make him feel safer, but he refused to let his guard down as he sprinted the rest of the way home, his hand gripped against the bag slung around his shoulder with the supplies.

He hadn't been put on any real missions yet, but he could at least do this, and he wouldn't let something like a branch, or something possibly following him stop him from the one thing his father deemed him good at. He didn't know what knocked that branch down, but he figured he'd look into it when he wasn't alone, and when night wasn't falling on the surrounding land.
