It would be misleading to claim that I am broke; in reality, I have a card that receives monthly funds, providing me with a safety net. I can use it if I ever find myself in a desperate situation, but for now, my life is quite leisurely, and I am managing just fine. As I contemplated this, she suddenly interrupted my thoughts, pulling me back into the conversation.

"Daughter, there is an upcoming banquet. You have been officially listed as a family member of the Xiang clan, and the patriarch has specifically requested your presence at this important event."

There was a long, contemplative pause on my end; the Xiang patriarch is the very reason my name changed from Thorsten to Xiang, a transformation that carries significant meaning for me. My original first name, Rangsia, was replaced with the affectionate nickname Mei Xiang, which reflects my fiery spirit and vibrant personality. "Foster mother, I will make sure to arrive on time for the banquet," I assured her, feeling a mix of excitement and apprehension.

"Make sure to use the card under Mei Xiang to purchase some beautiful clothing for the banquet. This time, you can stay for an entire week, and your brother will be there to assist you with the leave process," she added, her voice warm and encouraging.

"Thank you so much, foster mother," I replied, feeling a sense of gratitude wash over me.

"Of course, my dear. I love you, daughter. I look forward to seeing you then," she said, her tone filled with affection.

"I love you too... mother." I hesitated for a moment before hanging up; I had never called her mother before, but in that moment, the urge felt undeniably right and natural.

The next day marked the official start of the week, and I could feel the anticipation building within me.

As a receptionist, my days are usually quite dull and monotonous, filled with endless calls and appointment bookings that often blend together. Despite being overqualified for this role, the lack of stress and pressure makes it bearable and allows me to maintain a sense of calm. On this particular Monday, which is often regarded as the most dreaded day of the week, I entered the building with steady and purposeful steps. I wore a stylish flared knee-length skirt that swayed gently with my movements, paired with a high-collared blouse that featured long sleeves, and a waist-length jacket that added a touch of professionalism to my look. My curls were neatly arranged in a high bun, intricately adorned with a lovely purple bow, and I carefully hid my striking yellow-gold eyes behind colored contacts.

The clicking sound of my five-inch heels echoed through the hallway, drawing attention to my already striking appearance. Though I sometimes find myself doubting it, deep down I know that my looks are flawless and captivating. My almond-shaped eyes, framed by long, fluttering lashes, possess a toffee tone at the edges that harmonizes beautifully with the ends of my hair. I have a small, delicate nose, full lips that boast a natural dark pink hue, and clay-colored skin that adds to my unique allure. My tight curls cascade just past my shoulders, stretching to nearly my waist when pulled, creating a striking silhouette.

I take immense pride in my distinctive appearance, even if some may look at me with confusion or distaste, unable to appreciate the beauty of my individuality. I remind myself that my uniqueness is a strength, and I embrace it with confidence as I navigate through my day.

"Good morning, everyone."

"Morning, receptionist Xiang. Did you hear the news?"

"What news? Is it about Miss Lu?"

"The company has been acquired."

I was taken aback. Acquired? But why on earth would they do that? It seemed to be thriving, doing so well in the market. I nervously bit my lip, glancing around the bustling lobby filled with colleagues and clients, all engaged in their own conversations.

"Yes, management is currently discussing our future upstairs. I thought we were on the right track, and now this unsettling news has come out of nowhere."

"I'm sure we'll be fine. Our performance should convince the new owners to keep us on board, right?"

"Yeah, you're probably right."

As the chatter continued around me, I felt increasingly isolated. I scanned the room, hoping to find someone I could talk to, but everyone seemed preoccupied. I stepped aside to find a quieter spot and checked my phone for any messages.

I noticed my elder brother's number pop up and decided to send him a quick selfie to let him know I was thinking of him before diving into other messages that awaited my attention.

(brother 2): Mei Xiang, Mother mentioned that you'll be home for the banquet.

(me): Yes, I am. I'm still a bit unsure about what this banquet actually signifies.

[brother 2 is typing...] I continued to stare at my screen, feeling a wave of anxiety wash over me as I awaited his response.

(brother 2): Grandfather hasn't shared much information. Elder brother mentioned that it revolves around the deeds, companies, and various small stores owned by the old man.

I stared at the message for what felt like an eternity, feeling a sense of relief. If that's what it's about, then everything should be fine. I can simply take on the role of a supporter. My foster brothers, who are the sons of my foster father, will inherit a significant amount from the old man. Although it is a bit peculiar that the patriarch specifically asked me to attend, I felt it was important for me to show my respect and give him face by being present at the gathering.

(me): Thank you for the update, brother. The company has been bought, which is why I'm waiting for the management meeting to wrap up. I'll catch up with you later. Have a great day. Love you! [kiss]

I slipped my phone back into my bag, completely unaware that my message had stirred thoughts in a once-stoic man, prompting him to contemplate things he had not intended to consider.

The next day, we were all invited to a hotel, with rooms assigned by rank. We had been sent home earlier and informed that we would be discussing our future.

The hotel we rented was anything but ordinary, and it was surprising to see over 155 workers entering such an upscale venue.

I arrived dressed in jeans, a shirt, and a light jacket, carrying a small sports bag with daily necessities. After providing my name, I received my key card and headed to the elevator.

My room was on the sixth floor. When the elevator doors opened, I noticed the short hall with only two doors. I scanned my card and entered.

Inside, the room had a small lobby with a three-seater couch and two armchairs, a low table, and a wall-mounted television. There were three doors: the first led to a bedroom with a large bathroom featuring a rainfall shower and a tub for two. The second door opened to a small kitchen, while the third revealed a toilet with a mirror and a cabinet stocked with a first aid kit and women's necessities.

I was pleased with the accommodations, estimating the room's cost at around a thousand mits per night. After stripping down, I showered, and by eleven at night, I collapsed into bed naked.

Yawning, I covered my face with a sleep mask and fell asleep. I experienced vivid dreams that left my body feeling like it was on fire, as if something was wedged between my legs, moving back and forth. The mix of pleasure and pain made moans escape my lips, and I felt tossed about, wanting to beg for mercy.
