POV: Y/NThe night was quiet. Too quiet. The kind of quiet that made every rustle in the leaves sound like a looming threat. But in this moment, as we sat around the campfire, I found solace in the presence of my companions. My gaze flickered over the faces of the people who had become my family on this forsaken island.
Sagiri was methodically cleaning her sword, each movement precise and controlled, as though she could ward off any impending danger just by staying vigilant. Yuzuriha, by contrast, lay on the ground, staring up at the night sky with an almost casual indifference. Nurugai sat cross-legged by the fire, deep in meditation, while Isuzu leaned against a tree, her expression thoughtful as ever.
There was an ease in the group, a camaraderie born of shared struggles, but it wasn’t lost on me that the weight of our situation pressed on each of us differently.
“Y/N,” Sagiri spoke up, breaking the comfortable silence. Her voice was soft, but there was a firmness to it that made me sit up straighter. “What do you think is next for us?”
I paused, considering her question. “We’ve learned a lot about Tao, but we’re still only scratching the surface. There’s something deeper going on with this island, something we’re missing.”
Sagiri nodded thoughtfully. “I agree. The Lord Tensen are still a threat. We’ve managed to survive this long, but they won’t let us go easily.”
Yuzuriha rolled onto her side, propping her head up with her hand. “Well, we could just try to kill them all,” she said, a playful grin tugging at her lips. “That’s always an option.”
Isuzu’s quiet voice interjected. “It’s not that simple. They’re not just using Tao. They are Tao. Fighting them is like fighting the island itself.”
Yuzuriha groaned, falling back onto the ground dramatically. “Leave it to Isuzu to ruin the fun.”
I couldn’t help but smile at their banter. Despite the gravity of our situation, moments like these reminded me that we still had some semblance of normalcy. Even in the face of unimaginable odds, we could laugh. We could still be ourselves.
Nurugai opened her eyes from her meditation and looked at me, her expression serious. “We need to deepen our understanding of Tao. If we’re going to have any chance against the Lord Tensen, we need to be able to wield it like they do.”
She wasn’t wrong. We had been grasping at the basics of Tao for a while now, but it felt like we were always one step behind. It was time to change that.
“I’ve been thinking about that,” I said, glancing around the group. “Maybe it’s not just about learning how to use Tao in combat. Maybe we need to understand it on a more personal level. Each of us connects with Tao differently. We need to figure out what that connection means for us individually.”
Sagiri tilted her head, her brows furrowed in thought. “What do you suggest?”
“We take some time to focus on that,” I said. “To reflect on what we’ve learned so far. Each of us has our own strengths, our own way of interacting with Tao. If we can understand that better, we’ll be stronger as a group.”
Nurugai nodded in agreement. “Tao isn’t just a weapon. It’s part of who we are now.”
Yuzuriha yawned, clearly uninterested in the deeper philosophical aspects of the conversation. “Great, more soul-searching. Just what I needed.”
Sagiri shot her a look. “This isn’t a joke, Yuzuriha.”
“I know, I know,” Yuzuriha waved her hand dismissively. “But we’re not going to figure everything out by sitting around a campfire and having deep conversations. We need action.”
“She’s right,” Isuzu said quietly. “But action without understanding will only lead to more mistakes.”
I sighed, running a hand through my hair. They were both right, in their own way. “We’ll need to strike a balance between the two. For now, let’s rest. Tomorrow, we focus on learning more about our connection with Tao.”

The Morning After
The next morning, we split off into pairs, each of us focusing on our individual strengths. Sagiri and I trained together, sparring in silence as we both worked on feeling the flow of Tao in each movement. Her precision and control were unmatched, and I found myself admiring the way she blended her executioner’s skills with the subtle influence of Tao.
After an hour of sparring, we paused to catch our breath, standing side by side in the clearing.
“You’ve grown even stronger,” Sagiri remarked, her voice calm but sincere.
I smiled, wiping the sweat from my brow. “You’re one to talk. You’ve always had incredible control, but now... It’s like you’re moving with Tao, not just against it.”
Sagiri nodded, her gaze thoughtful. “It’s difficult to explain, but I’m starting to feel it more clearly. Tao is... it’s not something we can command. It’s something we move in harmony with. I’m starting to understand that now.”
Our conversation was interrupted as Yuzuriha approached, flipping a dagger in her hand casually. “Done with your deep, spiritual training? I’m bored.”
I chuckled. “You don’t seem like the meditative type.”
Yuzuriha grinned, her eyes glinting mischievously. “Oh, trust me, I’ve got my own way of connecting with Tao.”
Sagiri rolled her eyes, but there was a faint smile on her lips.
As the day went on, we all continued to focus on our individual growth. Nurugai, ever disciplined, practiced her forms with a grace that belied her warrior spirit. Isuzu remained contemplative, spending much of the day meditating by the water, her connection to Tao growing stronger with each passing moment.
By the time the sun began to set, there was a noticeable shift in the group. We were no longer just surviving on this island—we were beginning to understand it. To feel its rhythm. And in doing so, we were becoming more attuned to ourselves and to each other.
