Mia's days had fallen into a routine that felt simultaneously thrilling and suffocating. Every morning, she left the apartment before Jake woke, slipping out the door quietly and heading straight into Isla's world. Mia had memorized Isla's habits—where she spent her mornings, where she lunched, and where she liked to unwind in the late afternoons. The thrill of being near Isla, of observing her up close without being seen, had become an addiction Mia couldn't shake.

Today, Mia found herself at Isla's favorite coffee shop, seated at her usual corner table with a view of the entrance. The café was bustling, filled with students, professionals, and couples tucked into intimate conversations. The clink of coffee cups and the soft buzz of voices created a familiar background hum that Mia had grown used to. She sipped her latte—a mirror of Isla's usual order—her eyes flicking to the door every few moments, anticipation coiling in her chest.

Mia's phone buzzed with a message from Jake: "Where are you? Been out all day." Mia glanced at the screen, feeling a rush of irritation. Jake's attempts to keep tabs on her felt hypocritical, a hollow concern coming from the man who had been sneaking around behind her back. Mia typed a curt response: "Busy. Will be home later." She tossed the phone onto the table, dismissing him from her mind. The irony of Jake tracking her movements while he was actively cheating, annoyed her.

The door to the café swung open, and Mia's breath caught as Isla walked in, a beacon of color against the muted backdrop of the room. Dressed in a soft camel coat and dark jeans, Isla looked effortlessly put together, her red hair cascading over her shoulders like a wave of fire. Mia watched as Isla greeted the barista with a bright smile, the ease of her presence drawing eyes from around the café. Mia felt the familiar pang of envy mixed with an unsettling fascination. No matter how many times she saw Isla, the effect was always the same.

Isla ordered her latte, but instead of heading to her usual spot by the window, she scanned the room. Mia tensed when Isla's gaze landed on her. There was a flicker of recognition in Isla's eyes, a slight narrowing as if she was trying to place Mia's face. Mia tried to look casual, pretending to scroll through her phone, but her heart was pounding. She hadn't planned for this. She was always careful to stay on the fringes, to be invisible. But today, Isla was looking right at her.

Isla hesitated for a moment, then smiled and made her way toward Mia's table. Mia's pulse quickened, a mix of panic and exhilaration flooding her system. Isla was coming over, and there was no way to escape now.

"Hey," Isla said, her voice warm and friendly. "I hope I'm not interrupting, but... you look really familiar. Do we know each other?"

Mia forced a smile, her mind scrambling for an excuse. "Oh, I don't think so," she said, trying to keep her voice steady. "I'm here a lot, though. Maybe we've just seen each other around."

Isla's eyes lit up with recognition. "Yeah, that must be it. I feel like I've seen you a few times." Isla gestured to the empty chair across from Mia. "Do you mind if I sit? I'm waiting for someone, and this place is so crowded."

Mia nodded, unable to believe what was happening. "Sure, go ahead," she said, her voice wavering slightly. She hadn't planned for this, hadn't prepared for the possibility that Isla would actually speak to her. Now that it was happening, Mia felt both thrilled and terrified, trapped in a moment she had fantasized about but never truly expected.

Isla sat down, setting her coffee on the table. "I'm Isla, by the way," she said, extending her hand. "I feel weird just sitting here without introducing myself."

"Mia," she replied, shaking Isla's hand. The touch was brief but electric, and Mia felt a rush of emotions she couldn't quite sort through—envy, fascination, and something dangerously close to admiration.
