"Where exactly are you dragging me to?"

"You need to get back to those gold eyes again, right?"

By nightfall, Elias drove his burgundy 1967 Ford Mustang Coupe through the city, with Esme seated frigidly in the passenger seat. The leather cushions were cool against the silk of her pajama clothes, which she was in no mood to change out of, regardless of where they were headed.

"... So, I figured we stop by a pound. Find you a Lassie to sink your teeth into."

Esme's eyes burst open at that suggestion. "No! I'm not feeding on a dog!"

She couldn't have rejected the notion fast enough, much to his confusion as he questioned, "So, a dog is where you draw the line?"

And just as swiftly, Esme retorted. "Would you feed on an infant?"

She was deeply invested in his next response, counting the seconds that passed before his lips moved again. She even listened in on the way he said it.

"Nah," he muttered back to her.

She only narrowed her gaze in suspicion as she questioned his answer. "You were awfully modest when you said that... You've eaten a child, haven't you?!"

He gagged behind the wheel. "Ain't no body eatin' no kids!"

But she erupted in a malicious cackle, snorting out her doubts about his claim.

"You're so fucking dark," he grumbled his disturbance, attempting to divert the subject. "If you're too good to eat household pets, then where are we gonna go?"

"A deer would suffice."

"Where the hell am I supposed to find a deer?"

Exasperatedly, she sighed and mumbled out a sarcastic answer. "I would imagine a forest to be nearby. You know? A vast woodland place with critters?"

"Smartass."

She took his snide comment with stride as she crossed her arms, huddling herself deeper into the cushions of the seat.

Outside, the air was cool but calm, lightly breezing across her face as she closed her eyes and took in the atmosphere. A thin cottony layer of clouds veiled the sky, proving to be another quiet night.

She tried to be nonchalant. But Esme snuck a glance from the corner of her eye, observing him. When they left the building, Elias wore a jacket that was now nestled in the backseat. His arms were exposed, casually brandishing the muscles in his biceps and forearms.
