The next few days passed in a blur for Sanya. It was as if the world had tilted on its axis, and she was still trying to find her footing. After that morning with Aarav, where he'd kissed her with such tenderness, promising he wasn't going anywhere, she had expected some sort of clarity. But instead, she felt more uncertain than ever.
They had left his apartment together that morning, a quiet, almost tentative peace settling between them. Aarav had made sure to drop her off at her place, giving her a quick kiss before he left, but since then, there had been no deep conversations about what had happened. No declaration of what they were now. Just silence.
And the silence was driving her insane.
Sanya tried to keep herself busy. She threw herself into work, went out with her friends, and even spent time with her parents. But in the back of her mind, Aarav lingered like an unsolved puzzle. He hadn't pressed her for answers, hadn't forced her to define their relationship. But it was there, in every text message, in every glance when they saw each other at family events. A question hanging in the air between them: *What now?*
One afternoon, as Sanya was sitting at her desk, half-heartedly responding to emails, her phone buzzed with a message from Aarav.
---
**Aarav:** *Dinner tonight?*
---
Her heart did a little flip, as it always did whenever she saw his name pop up on her phone. She hadn't seen him in person since that morning, and the thought of being alone with him again sent a mix of excitement and nerves swirling in her stomach.
She quickly typed a response.
---
**Sanya:** *Sure. Where?*
---
His reply came almost immediately.
---
**Aarav:** *I'll pick you up at 8. It's a surprise.*
---
Sanya stared at the screen for a moment, her mind racing. A surprise? Aarav was not exactly the "romantic gestures" type. Their interactions had always been casual, sometimes playful, but never overly sentimental. Whatever he had planned for tonight, it was new territory for them.
The rest of the day dragged by as she tried to focus on her work, but her thoughts kept wandering to Aarav. What did he want to talk about? Would they finally address the elephant in the room? The tension between them had been building ever since that night, and she knew it was only a matter of time before something had to give.
By the time 8 p.m. rolled around, Sanya was both excited and anxious. She had changed her outfit three times before settling on a simple, flowy dress—something casual yet nice enough for a potential fancy dinner. When the doorbell rang, her heart skipped a beat.
She opened the door to find Aarav standing there, dressed in a crisp white shirt and dark jeans, holding a single red rose. The sight of him took her breath away for a moment, and she couldn't help but smile.
"A rose, huh?" she teased, taking the flower from him.
Aarav smirked, though there was a flicker of something softer in his eyes. "I thought I'd be a little cliché for once."
Sanya laughed, her nerves easing slightly. "I like it. Thank you."
"Ready?" Aarav asked, his voice warm, but there was a hint of anticipation behind it.
"Let's go," she said, slipping her hand into his as they walked out the door.
---
They drove in comfortable silence for a while, the city lights flashing by as they headed toward their destination. Sanya couldn't help but glance over at Aarav every few minutes, wondering what was going through his mind. He seemed calm, focused on the road, but she could sense the tension in the air.
After about thirty minutes, Aarav pulled into a quiet spot by the beach. The sound of the waves crashing against the shore greeted them as he parked the car, and Sanya's eyes widened in surprise.
"The beach?" she asked, turning to him with a smile. "I wasn't expecting this."
Aarav shrugged, but there was a softness in his expression. "I thought we could use a break from fancy dinners and big crowds. Just... some quiet."
Sanya felt her heart flutter at his words. It was thoughtful, more thoughtful than she had expected. Without another word, they got out of the car and made their way toward the shore, the cool evening breeze tugging at their clothes.
They walked along the sand in silence for a while, their footsteps the only sound other than the rhythmic crashing of the waves. Sanya could feel her nerves building again, but Aarav seemed content to just be in the moment, his hand occasionally brushing against hers as they strolled.
Eventually, they stopped near a large rock, sitting down together with the ocean spread out before them like a vast, glittering expanse.
Aarav was the first to break the silence.
"I've been thinking about us," he said, his voice low, but there was a weight to his words.
Sanya's heart skipped a beat. This was it. The conversation she had been dreading—and longing for.
"What about us?" she asked, her voice softer than she intended.
Aarav turned to look at her, his dark eyes serious but filled with something that made her pulse quicken. "I don't want to pretend anymore, Sanya. I don't want this to be fake. Not with you."
Sanya stared at him, her breath catching in her throat. She had known this conversation was coming, but hearing him say the words out loud made it all feel so much more real.
"I don't either," she admitted quietly. "But... what does that mean? For us?"
Aarav reached out, gently taking her hand in his. His thumb brushed over her skin, sending a shiver up her spine. "I don't know where this will go, Sanya. I don't have all the answers. But I know I want to be with you. For real. Not just for the sake of our families. Not just because of the marriage."
Sanya's heart was racing now, her emotions a tangled mess. She wanted to believe him, wanted to let herself fall into this, but the fear was still there, lurking in the back of her mind.
"Aarav," she began, her voice trembling slightly, "what if it doesn't work out? What if—"
He cut her off gently, squeezing her hand. "Sanya, nothing in life is guaranteed. But I'm willing to take the risk if you are. We've spent so much time pretending, and I don't want to do that anymore. I want to be with you—really be with you."
Sanya felt tears prickling at the corners of her eyes, but she blinked them away, a small, hopeful smile tugging at her lips. "I'm scared," she admitted. "But I don't want to pretend anymore either."
Aarav smiled, and it was the kind of smile that lit up his entire face, making her heart soar. He leaned in, pressing his forehead against hers, his voice a soft whisper. "We'll figure it out together."
And as they sat there, with the waves crashing around them and the world fading away, Sanya realized that maybe—just maybe—this uncertain future wasn't as terrifying as she thought. Because with Aarav, she wasn't facing it alone.
