As they sprinted back the way they had come, Kael's mind raced. If they didn't find a way to stop the machine, they would be hunted down, one by one. But even as they fled, Kael couldn't shake the feeling that they were running toward something far worse.
"Head this way! We can't let the shadows catch up!" Seren shouted over her shoulder, taking the lead. Her sharp eyes darted between the ruined buildings, searching for a path—one that wasn't crawling with shadows.
Kael didn't argue. Seren had been here before; she knew the layout of this place better than any of them. The others followed her without question, their fear palpable as the shadows closed in from every direction.
"The shadows will be waiting for us ahead," Kael muttered under his breath, matching Seren's pace. "We're walking right into them."
"I know," Seren replied, her voice tense but steady. "But there's no going back. They'd trap us there, too. We have to outsmart them."
They moved quickly through the narrow streets, dodging between crumbling walls and debris. The shadows were faster now, more aggressive, their tendrils stretching out, trying to ensnare anyone who strayed too far behind.
Seren glanced back to make sure the group was following when her foot caught on a jagged piece of debris. She stumbled forward, her balance lost as the shadows seized the opportunity. In an instant, a tendril lashed out, wrapping around her ankle and yanking her down to the ground.
The shadows hissed, pulling her toward the creeping darkness.
"Seren!" Kael shouted.
Without thinking, Kael lunged forward, throwing himself at the tendril gripping Seren. Grabbing a broken piece of metal, he slashed down hard on the shadow, severing its grip. The creature let out a sharp, inhuman screech and recoiled, retreating into the mist.
Kael grabbed Seren by the arm and pulled her to her feet. "We have to move!"
Seren nodded, her breathing unsteady, but she quickly regained her composure. She cast him a brief, grateful look before they continued running. "Thanks."
As they hurried onward, Kael felt a sharp pain bloom in his side where the shadow had grazed him. He grit his teeth, forcing himself to ignore it. Now wasn't the time to slow down, especially not when the others depended on them.
The group pressed forward, the shadows always a step behind, writhing and hissing in the distance. Seren led them through winding streets and derelict alleys, her instincts sharp as ever. But as they neared the entrance to an old tunnel, she abruptly stopped, raising a hand.
"Wait."
The others skidded to a halt behind her, breaths heavy with fear.
Seren scanned the area, her eyes narrowing. "It's too quiet." She took a cautious step forward, her voice low and tense. "They should've cut us off by now."
Kael, still feeling the dull ache from his hidden injury, stood beside her, his own gaze scanning the area. "What's going on?"
Seren's jaw tightened. "They're herding us. They want us to go this way."
Kael's heart sank as he processed her words. "It's a trap."
One of the group members cursed under his breath, panic creeping in. "Then what do we do?"
Seren's eyes hardened. "We use it to our advantage. They think we're cornered, so they'll drop their guard once we're inside. That's our chance."
Kael admired how Seren stayed composed even in the face of danger. "Are you sure about this?" he asked quietly.
