Amara

I am a sucker for comfort zones.

After making a pros and cons list and pondering a gazillion questions, risks, and uncertainties, I chose Knight Corporate.

Having worked in research and development in the past, I know that I can do well in this area again compared to human resources, which would have been a whole new experience for me.

Standing in the spacious elevator with a glass wall to my back which shows the view and the cardboard box of belongings in my arms, I am seconds away from starting my new job.

The elevator finally reaches the 17th floor and as the door opens I am greeted by a lady who is probably in her 40s.

"Good morning, I am Anita. I am the head of this department. You must be Amara" The lady says in a sweet voice.

"Yes, I am. Today is my first day."

"Come, I will show you around." She says and looks at the box in my arms for a second and shakes her head before leading the way.

"The building consists of 26 floors with our department, The R&D here at floor 17 and 18." She says while showing me around. To say that this place is enormous is an understatement. The interior is modern, classic and minimalist and honestly, all I imagined it to be. The work stations are spacious, providing a lot of privacy to work peacefully.

"Here, this is your booth." She gestures to the one near a window. I sit down and take it in. It is perfect and the window is a cherry on top as it provides the gorgeous view of the Paladin skyline and the sunsets as well. A sense of excitement runs down my spine.

"Call me if you need anything." She offers and gives me a sweet smile.

"Thank you, ma'am." I smiled back a bit too much, exposing my gummy smile to her accidentally. I retreat back to my learned, practised smile immediately.

Not that I hate my smile but it's better to keep it to myself.

She walks away, leaving me to explore my booth. I set down my stuff from the box which included my notes, a framed photo of me and Kaitlyn, my pens, laptop, charger and a small flower pot which has peace lilies. Now this feels homey.

I look around and see the employees hanging out near the kitchen, or the balcony and chatting with each other. I was called late today so that I could set up, adjust and understand the workings.

So far, I like the atmosphere here. I open my laptop and start connecting it to the company's network, install software, and configure email and other accounts. The tasks and meetings for tomorrow line up in my email and the chatter around me slowly comes to a halt.

I look up to know the reason why and a 6'4 reason stands merely two feet away from me in the form of Christopher Knight. I did not know the owner came to visit the departments, I wonder which floor his office is on. He is talking to Anita and she gives him a binder probably consisting of the monthly reports. As he takes it, he looks around and his eyes land at me. I give him a small smile and-

Woah he's coming here. I feel everyone's eyes on me and he comes close and leans against my booth.

With him standing so close, I can smell his cologne as it reaches my nose. His grey suit, black tie and perfectly styled hair make him look absolutely striking. He is a view to look at.

And his eyes, this is the first time I have ever seen someone with fully black eyes.

But it's not just the clothes, his presence, body language and authoritative demeanour make him stand out.
