First Day

The first day of college was always the hardest part of moving. Everyone stared at the new kid like you were some kind of alien. It didn’t help that Ava and I were both starting new schools. We didn’t know a soul here.

The hallways of the college was filled with activity as I walked through the front doors. People were laughing, gossiping, and kissing in the corridors, its like drama was happening in their lives. I kept my head down, not wanting to draw attention.

I stopped by the office to get my schedule. The secretary handed it to me with a friendly smile. “Welcome to Maplewood High, Joshua. I’m Sophia Parker, I'm sure you’ll fit right in.”

I doubted that.
She talked with me a little, then the bell rang so I said goodbye and left.

As I walked toward my first class, I noticed a girl sitting alone by her locker. She had her head buried in a book, her long blonde hair falling over her face. For a second, our eyes met, I noticed her beautiful blue eyes . She quickly looked away, but something about the moment stuck with me.

Who was she? She didn’t seem like the type who blended in with the popular crowd. But there was something about the way she looked at me—like she was trying to figure me out in that moment.

I shook the thought from my mind and continued down the hallway. Focus, Joshua. This wasn’t the time to get distracted.

By lunch, I had already met a few people. A guy named Jake sat down next to me in the cafeteria, full of happiness always smiling. He introduced me to his friends, and before I knew it, I was part of their group, at least for the day.

“Hey, new guy,” Jake said with a grin. “You seem cool. Wanna hang out after school?”

I hesitated. Ava would need me to pick her up after school. “Maybe another time,” I said. “I’ve got some stuff to take care of.”

Jake said with a smirk,"making out with your girl"

Making out. "No I ha..."

Jake laughed. “Just kidding. The offer’s always there.”

As the day came to an end, I couldn’t shake the feeling of being an outsider in this new place. Ava and I were starting from scratch, and as much as I wanted to make friends, my priority was....
I don't even know my priority.
