I wake up with a start, my head aching. I squint, trying in vain to make out the fuzzy images floating above my vision.
"Clara" someone says. It sounds like they were talking to me underwater. My eyes feel heavy but I blink a few more times. My vision clears, but my head still throbs. I realize with embarrassment that I'm lying on the the track. People surround me, with worried/relieved looks on their faces.
"Clara" a voice says again.
I shift my head to the sound of the voice. It's Tanner, my senses come back to my body and I realize that he is holding my hand.
"Hi" I say weakly. He looks as me with relief and worry.
"Clara," a different voice says breaking me out of my trance, it's Coach Jenson "Clara, we are going to have you sit out in the bleachers okay?" I nodded in agreement and tried to sit up. Everyone jumped on me with
"No stay down!" I sighed quietly. This happened all the time at home, if only they knew the truth about me. They insisted that someone carried me.
Tanner volunteered to carry me and Coach nodded in agreement.
He picked me up with out a hesitation, like picking up a kitten.
"Wow," he he whispered "what do you weigh? 70 pounds?"
I smiled at him and he laughs. I love his laugh, light and happy. I stare into his warm brown eyes.
"Something like that, I guess"
When we reached the bleachers and Tanner set me down carefully and turned to leave.
"Tanner before you leave can you tell me what happened?" I asked, desperately trying to get him to stay. I wanted to be with him.
Tanner looked at me with a small smile "Is it okay if I sit by you?" He asked
I nodded. My heart fluttered inside my chest. Tanner sat next to me and scooted close, he ever so causally took my my hand in his. I felt like I was going to burst with happiness.
"Well all day you haven't looked like you were feeling good, and when you started running hurdles you kinda collapsed. We were all worried."
I smiled faintly. Suddenly me head throbbed and I got dizzy. I must have looked bad too because Tanner steadied me and said something.
But I didn't hear him, the world was already turning black.
The visions I get usually make sense. This time is different.
I see people at war, teen boys shooting at each other. I yell and scream for them to stop, but no one can hear me. the scene shifts and I see cities on fire, bombs blowing up all sorts of places. The heat is blinding.
Suddenly I'm being shaken awake
"Clara! Clara!" A panicked voice brings me back to reality.
I blink and look at Tanner.
He stared back at me looking scared. "Y-you just fell over on me a-and weren't breathing for a second. I-I was so scared."
I take a deep breath in.
"Tanner I'm so sorry to scare you." I look down at my lap " I should tell you this, I pass out a lot."
Tanner looks at me worriedly
"Is it medical? Clara this could be serious-"
I interrupt him "I'll explain another time Tanner, my mom is here. "
I stand up still a bit dizzy, Tanner tries to stop me but I move forwards.
I walk to my moms car and hop in.
I look back at Tanner, I find he's still watching me looking worried.
