18 Months Later
Lena looked down at her dress. It was perfect. Lilies would overflow the aisle and climb the pillars when those doors opened, all arranged by Kara. Part of her thought she would be nervous, but smiling, she was willing those doors to open as Sam stepped beside her.
"Are you ready?" Sam asked.
"Absolutely."
Sam held her arm out for Lena to link with. "Slow down and savour the moment, rather than impatiently urging the doors to open."
"You're right, I should savour this. More importantly, I want to see Kara walk down the aisle."
Through the doors, the soft sounds of music filtered through the oak doors and, for once, Lena's heart missed a beat. This was it. She was getting married. Not just married, but married to Kara. Nothing could ruin this day.
Finally, the doors opened, lighting up the entryway to the church where smiling faces looked back to her. The white lilies were beautiful and as she and Sam stepped forward, the smell was amazing.
While walking to the front, Lena scanned the church for some faces. Not for Lillian or Lex. No, they were both locked up. Lena looked for Cat, Harley, Ivy, and, surprisingly, Alex. Alex had supported her like a sister, loving her almost as much as Kara.
With the final few steps, they reached the front of the church, Sam leaving her to stand behind her as they waited for Kara and Alex to appear through the double doors. Everyone turned away from her as the music shifted.
Kara.
Stunning. That was the only word for Kara as she stepped into view. Nothing else compared to Kara in a wedding dress. Strapless and fitted at the top, the skirt flowed to the floor so as she was floating towards her. As she walked towards her, the smile on Kara's perfect face was everything and, once again, Lena couldn't believe Kara wanted to marry her.
Before she knew it, Alex was letting go of Kara as they reached the front. Up close, Kara's smile turned softer as she glanced at the priest before focusing back on her. "Hi."
Lena inhaled slowly. "Hi."
Part of her was aware the priest was talking, but nothing really registered for Lena. All she could see was Kara. Sweet, adorable, gorgeous Kara, who she still couldn't believe was marrying her. In fact, the priest gestured to Kara.
Kara breathed out, a small laugh reaching to Lena's ears. "Lena, you are the best person I have ever met. You are my soulmate and I cannot believe that I get to call you my wife once I kiss you again. Winn once told me that when I met the one for me, I'd have this WAPOW moment. I didn't know what he meant until much later, even after I'd tagged along with Clark to interview you."
Lena smiled as Kara continued.
"When I met you in your office that first time, I was stunned. You were brilliant - are brilliant. I didn't realise that was my WAPOW moment because every moment I look at you is my WAPOW moment. Even now, standing opposite you as we get married, I still get that same feeling in my chest, knowing that you are everything to me."
Tears threatened to fall, threatened to ruin my makeup, but that couldn't happen. She refused to have mascara running down her cheeks in their photos. With a breath, she bit the inside of her cheek for a moment to focus back on Kara and the words that she'd been agonising over for over a year.
"Wow. Why did I let you go first?" Kara chuckled along with the rest of the church. "Since that first day you interviewed me, I've been under your spell. Which was annoying, because I wanted to focus on my company and not getting killed. You worked your way into my life so easily. I should have realised you were the one for me, but I didn't want to admit it."
Lena glanced at their joined hands. "I didn't want to admit it because it would put you in danger, but every time I got put in danger, you wanted to stand right next to me. I want to spend my entire life next to you, spoiling you with outrageous gifts you will never want to accept, loving you with everything I have. I am going to spend my life protecting you, not that you need it because you have never needed me to protect you. And I swear, if someone thinks the next few minutes are the best time to interrupt this wedding, there will be hell to pay, because it took way too long for us to get here in the first place. Whilst I love you enough to have another wedding, I don't want to wait any longer to call you my wife."
Finished, Lena looked back up to Kara, who, like her, was holding back tears. Again, the priest spoke, but no words registered with her except Sam leaning forward in the corner of her eye, holding the ring in her hand. They were moments from being married.
Carefully, Lena took the ring from a beaming Sam. It was the moment, the moment they exchanged rings before finally kissing. There was no other moment that compared to this, nothing compared to sliding the ring onto Kara's finger as she slid a ring onto her finger.
"You may now kiss the bride."
Kara surged forward, kissing her before the priest could finish his sentence. Kissing her back, Lena threaded her hand through Kara's hair and gave into the kiss. Happily gave in to the rest of her life with Kara.
