You and Jeff had always been drawn to the allure of the unknown.
Abandoned houses, with their creaky floorboards, peeling wallpaper, and eerie silence, were the perfect playground for the two of you.
Exploring these places had become a ritual, a way to pass the time of the days where you had no missions to do.
Today was no different. The house you had come across looked like it had been deserted for years, maybe even decades.
The windows were shattered, the roof looked like it was about to give way, and ivy was climbing the brick walls, making the place look like something out of a horror movie. It was the perfect place to spend the afternoon. The air was thick with the smell of rot and mold, but you and Jeff had long since gotten used to the unpleasant smells of these forgotten spaces. When you entered, you exchanged a brief glance; by now you both knew the drill.
Split up, search the area, make sure there were no squatters or drifters around.Jeff went upstairs, as he always did, leaving you to explore the ground floor.
Your heart beat slightly, as it always did when you ventured to those places, but there was a thrill, a sense of excitement. It was always interesting to visit abandoned houses, there was always something different about them, no one was ever the same as another.
You moved cautiously through the hallway, your footsteps muffled by the dust-coated wooden floorboards.
The house was large, much larger than you had expected, and each room you passed seemed more decayed than the last.
The wallpaper was faded, curling at the edges, and the furniture was covered in a thick layer of grime.
You imagined this place had once been full of life, perhaps even a grand home in its time, but now it was nothing more than a skeleton of its former self.
As you entered what had once been the kitchen, the first thing that hit you was the smell, a rancid stench that made your stomach churn.
It was a nauseating blend of mold, rot, and something you couldn't quite place.
You covered your nose and mouth with your sleeve, trying to block out the worst of it. The room was in terrible condition.
Broken dishes were scattered across the floor, the cupboards hung off their hinges, and the once-white tiles were stained with what looked like years of filth.
Despite the unpleasantness, you continued your search, moving quickly from one corner of the room to the next.
No one was there. Relieved, you turned to head back into the hallway, ready to meet up with Jeff and continue exploring the rest of the house. But just as you turned, you froze.
Standing in the doorway was a man.
You hadn't heard him approach, which sent a wave of unease crashing over you.
He was tall, with dirty, torn clothes and an eerie, wild look in his eyes.
The smell of alcohol could be smelled right away and you could tell he was drunk, very drunk.
Creepy Man:<Hey...>
His voice slurred as he staggered into the room, his gaze fixed on you in a way that made your skin crawl.
Creepy Man:<What are you doing here all alone? It's dangerous to go around abandoned houses... let me go with you.>
He grinned, but there was nothing friendly or reassuring about it. It was a smile that made your heart race for all the wrong reasons.
