The library's familiar scent of old paper and hushed whispers greeted me as I entered, my heart sinking with the realization that Minyu wouldn't be there. Our usual research sessions, filled with laughter and shared discoveries, were always a highlight of the week. But today, it was just me, Riki and our other classmates , our usual bickering guaranteed to be ten times worse without Minyu's calming presence.
I spotted them huddled around a table, their faces illuminated by the harsh fluorescent lights. Riki's gaze was fixed on me, a smirk playing on his lips. "Heyyy," I greeted, trying to sound nonchalant, but my voice came out more like a squeak.
"You're one minute late," he said, his tone dripping with mock seriousness.
"No, I'm not!" I retorted, checking my watch. "It's literally just 3:25!"
"Yeah, whatever, fox-eye. Let's just start this," he muttered, rolling his eyes.
I sat down next to him, my heart pounding as I felt the familiar sting of his disdain. As I settled in, my foot slipped on something slick. I stumbled, barely catching myself before I went sprawling onto the floor.
"Hey, throw your trash at the garbage, you jerk!" I exclaimed, my voice rising in anger. "You could've tripped me over!"
"Is that my fault that you didn't look?" he countered, his voice laced with sarcasm. "Plus, it's none of your business, and why are you even beside me? Ew."
"Hey! That's not nice to say, you jerk," I shot back, my cheeks burning with humiliation.
And just like that, we were back to our usual routine, bickering like two toddlers fighting over a broken toy.
"Can't you guys get along without Minyu for once?" one of our classmates snapped, his voice laced with exasperation. "We haven't even started yet."
"You should say that to this jerk," I defended myself, pointing a finger at Riki.
"Me? You're literally the one who started it."
"What do you mean 'me'?" I argued, my voice rising. "You're the one who put the banana peel on the ground on purpose!"
"On purpose? I just ate that banana and probably slipped accidentally, but I didn't put it there!" he insisted, his eyes narrowed.
"Purpose or not, it's still your fault!" I yelled, my frustration reaching its peak.
"Okay, okay, you two stop already," one of our classmates intervened, trying to restore some semblance of order. "Let's start our research already!"
We reluctantly began our research session, the tension hanging thick in the air. Every few minutes, a new argument would erupt, sparked by the smallest of things. A misplaced book, a differing opinion on a source, a stray piece of paper – everything seemed to fuel our animosity.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity, our session was over. I gathered my belongings, my mind already replaying the countless insults and petty arguments that had filled the afternoon. I couldn't wait to escape Riki's presence and finally breathe a sigh of relief.
"Finally done with this session," Riki said, his voice dripping with disdain. "I'm tired of seeing this ugly creature."
"Excuse me?" I retorted, my anger flaring. "You should probably go see the doctor so they can check what's going on with your eye, because right now you're mistaking a total goddess for an ugly face like yours!"
With that, I stormed out of the library, leaving Riki speechless. I didn't even bother to look back. I was done with his annoying face and attitude. I couldn't wait for this research project to be over, just so I could finally be rid of him.
I swear, no one will be more excited than me when we finally pass this research to our professor. I never want to even talk to Riki again, let alone look at his face. Just thinking about him makes my blood boil.
