Chapter 7

Elira

Days turned into a week, and Elira's situation remained precarious. Each day, she repeated her routine: eat the meager meals provided, stare out the window, and listen intently for any scraps of information she could gather.

One afternoon, she overheard the guards discussing a festival—an event that would take place soon in the castle, one that involved not only the vampires but also a gathering of the human settlements. The thought of so many humans together in one place sent a surge of hope through her veins.

If she could blend in during the festival, perhaps she could escape.

Elira resolved to make her plans, but her thoughts were interrupted by the sound of the door creaking open. Kaelan entered, his presence commanding and filled with an unsettling confidence.

"Are you ready to talk?" he asked, his voice smooth but edged with something she couldn't quite decipher.

Elira narrowed her eyes, crossing her arms defensively. "Talk? About what? Your plans for world domination?"

Kaelan raised an eyebrow, amusement flickering across his face. "You're cleverer than most humans, but I'm not here to toy with you. I need to know what you intend to do. Your refusal to cooperate is becoming inconvenient."

"Cooperate?" she echoed, her voice dripping with sarcasm. "You mean submit to your will?"

He stepped closer, and she felt the air thicken between them. "Submission is the last thing I desire from you. I need to understand you, Elira. You have something I can use—a strength that is rare in your kind."

She recoiled slightly at his words. "What do you want from me? You've taken everything from me already!"

Kaelan's expression hardened, but there was a flicker of something softer beneath his stern demeanor. "I didn't take anything. You took action to protect your brother, and that has consequences. But I'm offering you a choice—help me, and I will ensure your village remains safe. Refuse, and you risk not just your life, but your brother's as well."

Elira's heart raced, anger bubbling to the surface. "You think I would help you after what you've done? You're a monster!"

His eyes flashed with something—frustration, maybe? "And yet, here you are, alive. If you truly wish to protect your brother, you'll consider my offer."

Elira hesitated, torn between her desire for revenge and the very real threat Kaelan represented. But one thing was clear: she needed to find a way to turn this situation to her advantage.

"Fine," she said, forcing the words out. "I'll play your game. But know this, Kaelan: I won't hesitate to betray you if it means saving my family."

He smirked, a wicked glint in his eyes. "I wouldn't expect anything less."
