The air was thick with fog, swirling like something alive, wrapping its tendrils around the trees and suffocating the light. Mira and Draven were running, their feet barely touching the ground as they raced through the dense forest, the sound of distant gunfire and screams echoing in the darkness behind them.
"We can't stop!" Mira gasped, her breath coming in short, sharp bursts.
Draven's eyes darted around, searching for something, anything, to give them an advantage. The creatures of the sanctuary were fighting back, but he knew they wouldn't be enough against the sheer force of the corporation. The Warden Corporation wasn't just a typical enemy; they were hunters, and they had brought weapons specifically designed to capture and kill the creatures.
They had underestimated them.
As they reached the clearing at the heart of the sanctuary, something changed in the air. A deep, unsettling silence descended, and the fog grew thicker, almost blinding them. Mira's skin prickled with unease, and she reached out instinctively, grabbing Draven's arm.
"Something's wrong..." she whispered, her voice barely audible in the eerie stillness.
Suddenly, a low growl rumbled through the fog, vibrating through the ground beneath their feet. Mira's heart skipped a beat as she turned slowly, trying to pinpoint the source of the sound. Shadows shifted in the mist, shapes that didn't belong to any creature she had ever seen before.
"Draven..." Mira's voice was trembling now. "What is that?"
Before Draven could respond, something lunged out of the fog—a twisted, deformed creature, its skin slick with black ichor, eyes glowing an unnatural red. It wasn't one of the sanctuary's creatures. It was something else.
Something far more dangerous.
Mira screamed as the creature charged at them, its jagged claws extended, ready to tear them apart. Draven shoved her out of the way just in time, drawing his blade and slashing at the monster with a fierce intensity. But his strikes barely made a dent. The creature was fast, unnaturally so, and it seemed to be regenerating almost instantly, its wounds closing before their eyes.
"Run!" Draven shouted, his voice filled with urgency.
Mira didn't need to be told twice. She bolted, her heart pounding in her chest, as more creatures began emerging from the fog. They were everywhere, slithering and creeping out of the shadows, surrounding them from all sides.
Suddenly, Mira's vision blurred. The ground beneath her feet seemed to shift, and her mind was overwhelmed by a flood of images—flashes of faces, memories she didn't recognize. It was as if the fog itself was reaching into her mind, pulling at something deep within her.
"No... no, no!" she screamed, clutching her head as the images grew more vivid, more violent. She saw herself standing over Draven's lifeless body, his blood pooling around her feet. She saw the sanctuary in flames, the creatures lying dead and broken. And then, she saw herself... alone.
Completely and utterly alone.
The vision snapped away just as quickly as it had come, leaving her gasping for air. She stumbled, her legs giving out beneath her, as the cold, wet ground met her knees. Draven was shouting something in the distance, but his voice was muffled, as though she were underwater.
And then, through the fog, she saw it—a figure standing at the edge of the clearing. It was tall, its form distorted by the swirling mist, but Mira could feel its gaze piercing through her. It wasn't one of the creatures. It wasn't even human.
It was something... worse.
"Mira..." The voice was soft, almost gentle, but it chilled her to the bone.
She turned slowly, her body moving against her will, as the figure stepped forward. It was close enough now for her to make out its face—or what was left of it. Its skin was rotted and decaying, chunks of flesh hanging loosely from its bones, and its eyes... they were hollow. Empty.
"You can't save them..." it whispered, its voice echoing inside her mind. "You'll fail... just like before..."
Mira's blood turned to ice. This wasn't real. It couldn't be real. But the fear coursing through her veins told her otherwise. She tried to scream, but no sound came out. Her voice was trapped inside her throat, suffocated by the fog that was now suffocating her.
Suddenly, Draven appeared beside her, grabbing her arm and pulling her back to her feet. "We need to go, now!" he shouted, his face filled with panic.
But Mira couldn't move. She was frozen in place, her eyes locked on the figure in the fog. "Draven... do you see it?" she whispered.
Draven's eyes followed her gaze, but he saw nothing. "Mira, there's nothing there! It's in your head!"
But she knew it wasn't. It was real, and it was coming for them.
Before she could respond, the fog shifted again, and the figure vanished. In its place, the ground began to tremble, and a deep, guttural growl echoed through the forest. The creatures were coming, and this time, they wouldn't stop until they had torn everything apart.
"Run!" Draven shouted again, pulling her forward.
They ran, dodging through the trees as the creatures closed in around them. The fog was thick, disorienting them at every turn, but Mira could feel the presence behind them, watching, waiting. It was playing with them, toying with their fear.
And then... they reached the edge of the sanctuary.
The moment they crossed the boundary, the fog lifted, and the world became clear again. The creatures stopped at the edge, their glowing eyes watching from the shadows, but they didn't follow. It was as if an invisible barrier was holding them back.
Mira collapsed to the ground, her body trembling with exhaustion and fear. "What... what were those things?" she gasped, looking up at Draven with wide, terrified eyes.
Draven was silent for a moment, his face grim. "I don't know... but I don't think they were from this world."
Mira's heart sank. The sanctuary was no longer a safe haven. It was a trap, and something far worse than the corporation was hunting them.
As they sat in the cold, damp clearing, the silence was broken by a low, mechanical hum. Mira's eyes shot up as she saw it—a sleek, black helicopter hovering just above the treetops, its blades cutting through the air with a deadly precision.
And then she saw the logo.
The Warden Corporation.
The shadowy figures of soldiers began descending from the helicopter, their guns trained on Mira and Draven.
"There's nowhere left to run," Draven muttered, drawing his blade again.
Mira's mind raced. The creatures, the corporation, the visions... it was all connected. And now, they were out of time.
But before the soldiers could reach them, the ground beneath their feet began to crack, and the air grew colder, darker. A low, rumbling voice echoed from the earth itself.
"You should never have come here..."
And then... the world fell apart.
