Emma sat on the edge of the bed, her hands trembling slightly as she tried to process what had just happened. The weight of the memory—the cold, sterile lab, Sasha's cryptic words—pressed down on her, suffocating in its intensity. She had expected to unearth something about her past, but the vision of the laboratory had caught her off guard, pulling her into a reality far more sinister than she had ever imagined.
Ava remained calm as she continued to type into her tablet, her fingers dancing over the keys with methodical precision. Ryan, however, was pacing the room, his hands moving to rub the back of his neck—a nervous habit Emma had seen before. She could tell he was worried, though he was trying to mask it. That wasn't a good sign.
"What did Sasha say exactly?" Ryan asked, breaking the silence. His voice was calm but edged with urgency, as if each word was one step closer to piecing together the mystery they were all caught in.
Emma exhaled slowly, trying to recall the fleeting words. "She said something about... what we did not being just about rebellion. She said there was something bigger, something they couldn't talk about back then." She paused, her brows furrowing. "But that's not what's bothering me. It's the lab. I've never seen it before, but it felt... familiar."
Ava glanced up from her tablet, her sharp gaze locking onto Emma. "Familiar how?"
"I don't know," Emma replied, her voice shaky. "It's like I knew it existed, even though I don't have any specific memory of being there. There was this man in a lab coat, but I couldn't hear what he was saying. I just remember the machines, the sound of them buzzing, and this overwhelming feeling that something terrible was happening."
Ryan stopped pacing, his eyes narrowing. "Do you think it's possible they experimented on you? That they did something to your memory?"
Emma's heart skipped a beat at the suggestion. Experimented on her? It sounded too far-fetched, too terrifying to be true. And yet, everything about this situation was far from normal. Could it be possible?
Ava cleared her throat, drawing their attention. "It's not out of the question," she said slowly. "Memory suppression techniques exist, especially in highly classified operations. If you were involved in something bigger—something that had to remain hidden—then it's plausible they erased or buried certain memories to protect whatever information you carried."
"But why me?" Emma asked, her frustration bubbling to the surface. "I was just a teenager back then. I wasn't anyone important."
Ava stood, her posture straight and deliberate as she crossed the room to stand by Emma's side. "You may not have been important at the time, but you were involved. And that makes you a liability to them now. Whatever they did to you back then, they didn't expect you to resurface, or for the situation to escalate like this."
Emma's mind raced, trying to piece together the fragments of her past with this new information. Her involvement with Sasha had always felt like a rebellion against a corrupt system, a fight for justice. But if there was more to it—if there were hidden layers she had never been aware of—then her entire perception of her past had just shifted.
"What do we do now?" Emma asked, her voice barely a whisper.
Ryan crossed his arms, his face tight with thought. "We need more information. We can't just rely on these fragmented memories. There's got to be some record of this lab, or at least something that connects Mr. Black to it."
Ava nodded. "Agreed. We need to dig deeper into Mr. Black's network. If Sasha was part of this, then there's a trail somewhere, and we need to find it before they make their next move."
Emma's stomach churned. She had thought Sasha's betrayal was the worst part of this ordeal, but now it seemed that his involvement was just the tip of the iceberg. Whoever Mr. Black was, he had orchestrated something far larger and more dangerous than she had ever realised.
"What if... what if we don't have time?" Emma asked, voicing the fear that had been gnawing at her since the vision of the lab. "What if they're already coming for me?"
Ryan and Ava exchanged a glance, and for the first time since Ava had arrived, Emma saw a flicker of uncertainty in the woman's eyes.
"They're already moving," Ava said, her voice steady despite the weight of her words. "That much is clear. But we can't afford to panic. We have the advantage of knowing they want you alive—for now. That gives us some time to maneuver. But we need to be smart about our next steps."
Emma swallowed hard, nodding. "So, what's the plan?"
Ava glanced at Ryan, who stepped forward, taking charge of the conversation. "We're going to split up. Ava's going to trace the communication lines Mr. Black's network has been using. There's a chance we can intercept more intel about their operations and figure out exactly where this lab is."
"And me?" Emma asked, her heart racing.
"You and I are going to move to a secondary safe house," Ryan replied. "We can't stay here for long. If they know you're carrying something important, they'll have ways of tracking you. We need to stay ahead of them."
Emma nodded, the gravity of the situation sinking in deeper. There was no escaping this anymore. She was in the thick of it, whether she wanted to be or not.
As Ava gathered her equipment, Ryan stepped closer, lowering his voice so only Emma could hear. "I know this is a lot to take in, but I need you to trust me. We're going to get through this."
Emma met his gaze, seeing the determination in his eyes. Despite everything, she felt a glimmer of hope. Ryan had been by her side through so much already, and though the road ahead was dark and uncertain, she wasn't facing it alone.
"I trust you," she whispered, the words a quiet affirmation of her resolve.
With a final nod, Ryan moved to the door, glancing back at Ava. "We'll meet again in 24 hours. Stay sharp."
Ava gave a curt nod, already engrossed in her tablet, fingers flying as she worked through layers of encrypted data. Emma felt a surge of gratitude for the woman's unflinching professionalism, even if it was intimidating.
As they stepped out into the cold night, the wind biting at their skin, Emma felt the weight of the world pressing down on her. But she also felt a strange sense of clarity. The answers were out there, buried in her past, waiting to be uncovered. And no matter how terrifying they might be, she was ready to face them.
Together with Ryan, she would confront the ghosts of her past and unravel the conspiracy that had brought her life to the brink. Because now, there was no turning back.
Not for her. Not for Sasha. And not for the truth.
