"Viv?" Owen , my father, questioned when he noticed my scream. Everyone was doing the best that they could to hold back the waves of trolls, but there were just so many. When I realized that I had blown my cover I stopped, just to get swept out of the way by a passing troll. For a moment everything was just a blur of sounds and colors until it all finally stopped at once.
I awoke with a start in a dark room with a spitting head ache. For a second I feared the worst, that we had been captured by the trolls and were waiting for our time as dinner. I squinted into the darkness and saw others soldiers with bandages and knew that was not the case, trolls would have just put the injured in the stewing pot. I rubbed my eye in an attempt to clear them and felt a soft bandage above them. I wasn't sure what to do until I remember the pain expression on my father's face. I got out of the bed as quick I could only to stumble and grab the bed post for support and curse under my breath. After the fog cleared I wobbled my way to the door, I had to find out if my father had been saved as well.
I stopped at the door when I heard voices. "How could you let her come back?" father stage whispered. I guess he didn't to wake some of the more injured soldiers who would find only pain their consciousness. "It seemed like a good idea at the time," Ozan replied rather sheepishly. Ariane trying to reason said, "Seriously Owen, you have to understand that she's not your little girl any more. She's just trying to help everyone. I know when you were her age you wouldn't have let anyone or anything stop you." I cracked the door open just enough that I could see into the dimly lit room. Ozan was standing beside a table drinking, Ariane was sitting in a small uncomfortable looking wooden chair, and in the middle in of the back wall was my father, looking broken and almost unrecognizable. His leg was laying straight out on top of a stool, covered with a bandage. When he raised his head to reply I could see red rings around his eyes, like he had been crying for hours. "I never had a father to teach me! When I was a child I was sent to join the white knights and never saw my father or mother again! What else would you expect from some who has only known training and sword fighting for the day he was 5 years old?" I had never really heard him talk about my grandparents. He always told me that they had left a long time ago; I was under the impression that they had died, not that they had just abandoned him. I felt a little bad after hearing that, no wonder he tried to send me away in place of taking a chance at losing me.
For a split second I locked eyes with Ariane. "Well I believe our conversation is no longer private," she commented. Ozan and father both turned to the entrance of the infirmary as I finally opened the door. "What are you doing up? You need to rest, go back to bed," father commanded. "Owen are you so naive that you think she just got up?" Ozan gave a humorless laugh, "I heard her curse when she woke up." I ignored Ozan and stared at my father. "Why didn't you ever tell me they left you?" I asked. Father's eyes became downcast and I heard the clinking of glass as Ozan poured himself another drink. "Why don't you tell her, we're all friends here." He remarked, "At least they didn't leave me with a ban of thieves." Ozan went to throw something when Ariane stood up and told them both to shut up. "Honestly, you two are so thick headed and stupid at the best of times." She turned to me then. "He thought you would feel sorry for him. Owen is so proud he could've even stand it if his own daughter saw the smallest bit of weakness," Ariane informed me.
