The episode picks up with Devi sitting in her dorm room, staring at her phone. Ben's supportive text from the previous episode had given her some comfort, but lately, she's felt a growing distance between them. She brushes it off as just a result of their break and the usual stress of long-distance relationships.
Meanwhile, at Columbia, Ben is feeling conflicted. Maya's been around more often—just as a friend, but her attention feels different now. She's always making time for him, inviting him to study or grab coffee, and her compliments have become more personal. Though Ben hasn't acted on anything, there's a tension between them that he can't quite ignore.
As they sit in the library studying, Maya leans in a bit too close, pointing at something on his laptop. "You're really smart, Ben. I don't think I've met anyone else who gets this stuff as easily as you do."
Ben shifts uncomfortably in his seat, his mind wandering back to Devi. He can't shake the guilt that's creeping in. "Thanks," he mumbles, moving his chair slightly to create more distance between them. He doesn't want to encourage Maya, but the situation feels like a tightrope—he doesn't want to lose her friendship either.
Back at Princeton, Devi is on a FaceTime call with Fabiola and Eleanor. They've all been so busy lately that they haven't had time to catch up properly. As they talk about their classes, Devi finds herself zoning out, thinking about Ben.
"Devi?" Fabiola says, snapping her fingers in front of the screen. "You still with us?"
"Yeah, sorry," Devi says, shaking her head. "I've just been distracted."
"Ben stuff?" Eleanor asks knowingly.
"Yeah. I don't know, things just feel... off. We haven't been talking as much, and whenever we do, it's kind of surface-level. I can't explain it, but I feel like I'm missing something."
Fabiola tilts her head sympathetically. "Long-distance is hard, Devi. Maybe you guys just need to have a real conversation about what's going on."
"Yeah, and if you feel like something's wrong, you should trust that instinct," Eleanor adds. "Don't wait too long to talk to him."
Devi nods, feeling the weight of their words. She knows they're right, but confronting Ben about this makes her nervous. What if things aren't just "off"—what if something's actually wrong?
Later that evening, Devi sends Ben a text: Can we talk soon? I feel like we haven't had a real conversation in a while.
Ben reads her message, feeling a pit in his stomach. He wants to talk to Devi, to be honest with her about Maya's growing interest, but he's afraid of how it will look. He hasn't done anything wrong, but he knows that Maya's attention has blurred the lines of their friendship.
He texts back: Yeah, let's talk tonight.
When they finally FaceTime, there's an awkward tension between them that neither can ignore. Ben looks tired, and Devi's anxiety is written all over her face.
"So, how's everything going?" Devi asks, trying to keep her tone light.
"It's fine," Ben says, but his voice lacks conviction. "Just a lot of work, you know?"
"Yeah, I get that," Devi says, but she can't keep her real thoughts in any longer. "Ben, is something going on? You've been kind of distant lately, and I just... I don't know, it feels like you're holding back."
Ben hesitates, unsure of how to explain what's been happening with Maya. He doesn't want to make it a bigger deal than it is, but he also doesn't want to lie to Devi.
"Look, Devi, there's something I need to tell you," he begins, rubbing his hand over his face. "Maya... she's been spending a lot of time with me lately. I didn't think much of it at first, but I think she might be interested in me."
Devi's heart drops at his words, though she tries to stay calm. "Interested in you? Like... more than just a friend?"
"Yeah, I think so," Ben admits. "But I haven't done anything. I swear. I just didn't want to hide it from you."
Devi feels a mixture of anger, jealousy, and hurt all at once. "Why didn't you tell me sooner, Ben?"
"I didn't want to worry you, and I wasn't sure if it was even a big deal. But I get it now—I should've told you," Ben says, his voice sincere.
Devi takes a deep breath, trying to sort through her emotions. "So, what happens now?"
"I don't know," Ben says honestly. "I'll set some boundaries with her. I don't want to mess this up, Devi. I want us to work."
Devi isn't sure what to say. She appreciates Ben's honesty, but the fact that Maya is still a part of his life makes her feel uneasy. "I need some time to think about all of this," she finally says. "I don't know how I feel right now."
"Take all the time you need," Ben says, his voice soft. "I'm sorry."
The episode ends with Devi sitting on her bed, staring at her phone again, but this time feeling more uncertain than ever. The distance between her and Ben feels wider than before, and she's not sure if they can bridge it this time.
As the screen fades to black, Devi's voiceover echoes: "I've always thought I could handle anything, but maybe some things are too hard to fix."
