Mykel picked up the skull from the cardboard box, its weight resting firmly on the palm of his hand.
It had a slightly faded brown color, chipped in places as though it had seen rough handling over time.
The room was dim, the lamp flickering on his study desk and projecting shifting shadows on the wall, making it even more difficult for Mykel to focus on the bones laid out in front of him.
"Huh," He exclaimed, dropped the skull back into the box, and reached out for another bone, holding it closer to the light to examine it.
"The hyoid bone," Mykel whispered and ran his fingers along the parts of the bone, mind-blown and trying to remember everything he learned in class that day about the hyoid.
He pressed his fingers on the surface, trying to memorize the feeling of it for his upcoming anatomy exam.
Despite his best efforts, though, Mykel kept getting distracted. He couldn't take his mind off of the fact that this wasn't just any bone set. His older sister had gifted it to him after she found out that he got into med school and promised him that it was a real set, here- real people bones.
She'd laughed, kissed his forehead, and handed him the box with a wink. "Congratulations, future doctor."
"Who are you?" Mykel wondered, eyes scanning the collection when suddenly a loud thud echoed behind him.
"What the fuck?" He turned back, searching for the cause of the sound, his eyes trained suspiciously onto the corners, squinting for any movement.
Everything suddenly quietened- too quiet according to Mykel- and he swore he could hear his heart racing.
It felt like the entire room was holding its breath.
"Well, My name is Edward, but everybody just called me Eddie."
Mykel's heart stopped, making him sharply turn back, just to come face to face with a hue of a person, skin translucent and eyes white.
Mykel froze, fear gripping every nerve in his body.
There, sitting on his table with the most casualty Mykel has ever seen on a ghost (not that he has ever seen any ghost before, but don't ghosts maintain a certain level of attitude?) was a spooky figure, playing with the highlighter he had left open.
He was not even a typical eerie white-sheet-wearing kind of ghost. No, he looked like a human, albeit a little pale, wearing a beaten-up leather jacket and old biker boots, looking like he'd stepped out of a 90s punk band rather than the dead.
Sweat dripped from his forehead, even though the weather around was cold as fuck. His palms were getting clammy and the edges of his vision darkened. He trembled, trying to stand but suddenly losing balance as he slumped into the shoulder of the boy- ghost? It was currently still unclear.
That was when Mykel realized that his hand was on the boy's (ghost's?) neck, The hyoid bone he was holding not long ago felt as if it was a part of Eddie himself.
"Actually, I don't think all these bones are mine though. I don't feel the tingly feeling near them. I'm pretty sure only whatever this 'U' bone you were holding is mine. Don't know who the rest belonged to." The Eddie ghost said with nonchalance.
That bastard of a ghost didn't even look like he had the brain cells to give a fuck about what was currently happening.
Well, maybe he didn't have brain cells? Who here knew the anatomy of ghosts? No one. Exactly.
"What?" Mykel wondered if this was enough to get officially declared as crazy.
"Dosen't matter, but no fear because I'm here. I'll help you find out who the rest of the bones belong to so that you can give them back" Eddie smiled at Mykel and now, he was really about to faint.
