I'm out of the house and on my way in less than ten minutes. I'm wearing my favorite suit from that first shopping trip with Martina when I arrived in Miami, one that cost way more than I ever would have paid for a suit in my public defender days. I've never really cared much about designer clothes and fashion trends, but I have to admit that when I put this suit on I feel both powerful and stylish. It's a bit overkill for just a regular day at the office, or even a routine court appearance, so I don't wear it often.
My original plan was to wear it to celebrate my grandfather. Now I consider it the armor I'll be wearing when I crush our mutual enemy.
How dare Dylan try to ruin the reputation of Andrew Reese, one of the most highly respected attorneys in Miami on the very day he's being recognized for his exemplary career spanning more than 40 years, his commitment to justice and ethics, and his good works in the community?
There's little ball of rage growing inside me, strong enough to push out my own sorrow that Max has betrayed me so completely. My brain is not accepting the possibility that Max would actually marry Angelica. I wouldn't even believe it for a second if it hadn't been Max himself who told me.
But I'm going to have deal with that later. For now, I just let my anger at Max blend in with the outrage I'm feeling toward Dylan.
Whatever he's done - whatever he's planning for today - I'm not going to let it happen. And if there's a way to turn it around against him, you better believe I will.
I call Martina and clue her in, ask her to let CJ know what's going on. Martina agrees to cover the front desk so Jenny can come back to my office to try to fix the mess.
By the time I arrive, Jenny and CJ are at my desk with the PowerPoint up on CJ's laptop, and a hard copy of both scripts.
"He followed my script, but then he put in these changes. And look at the photos," Jenny is saying. I can hear the barely contained tears in her voice.
"Show me what he did," I say, shutting the door behind me.
"Look, the beginning is all the same, but then we get to the part about adding the criminal law department to the firm, and he's changed the script." She points, and I pick up the copy to read it.
"Oh my God." It's a whole section stating that my grandfather was involved in illegal transactions representing known mob figures. When you read this script, you'd think he was single-handedly responsible for everything from shady construction kickbacks, to illegal dealings with the mayor's office and councilmen receiving bribes from out-of-state developers.
I look over at the screen. The photo is a much younger version of my grandfather with his arm around the shoulder of a much younger version of the senior Maxwell Bennett. They are posing in front of a construction site at a ribbon-cutting ceremony, and smiling broadly. Then there's one of my grandfather at a charity event posing with a man I don't recognize, drinks in hand.
"Who is that?" I ask.
"He's a former city councilman who was later convicted of crimes involving bribery and corruption," CJ says. "I remember reading about it in a local history class when I was in high school. All that stuff was going on back in the 1990's, I think. There was a lot of corruption in construction and development back then."
The script goes on about how Andrew Reese is a man who gets the job done, even if he has to cut some corners to do it.
"This is outrageous!" I can feel that hot fist of temper about to explode. "It's a charity event. My grandfather probably had his photo taken with half the people who were there. This makes it look like he was in bed with a dirty politician."
