"Jack, I got your text. What's wrong?" Amara asked worried as Jack took a long deep breath.
"Capuccio... removed me from the case." Jack said, breathless. Upset. He knew he needed almost every answer from this killer.
"What case? The case about the killing?" Amara asked confused. Jack jever mentioned to her about Evo.
"I will have to explain everything when I get home. I won't be working any later than 6 so I guess I'll be home for dinner... I love you." Jack said, he hung up. A comforting silence hung in the air as he closed his eyes.
"Roth. I heard they removed you from the-" Casey said as Jack held up his hand.
"Yes. He did." Jack said, silencing Casey.
"I feel bad. You know." Casey lied. He was trying to make himself seem less awkward. Had it been Detective Rey, Jack would've been a bit softer. But, Rey died a year ago. And, Casey was the replacement. Jack and Casey weren't exactly... friends. Nor even acquaintances.
"Whatever," Jack mumbled as he decided to look through some old files. An old file of Evo popped up into his hands. There were numerous pictures of a tall figure with all black on, and a black face mask. Long braids down the back of the figure. He flipped through some more pictures until he saw a picture of Evo getting out of a car. He looked closer. Ding ding, a bell rung in his head. He jumped out of his seat. Casey staring at him oddly.
"Capuccio!" Jack yelled as he barged into the Captain's office. Capuccio looked startled as he fixed his evil eyes on Jack.
"What boy?" He asked.
"Put me back on the case. Please. I can get you to this killer, I promise."
"And, just how?"
"You see this?" Jack said, taking the picture from the folder. He gave it to Capuccio, who studied the picture. "I can get John to magnify this. Get the license plate number and boom, we atleast have our first suspect. It's not science, we should've did this on Day 1." Jack explained, both excited and nervous.
"You..." Capuccio started, but couldn't. Jack was with the police department for 15 years now, he solved a lot of the complicated cases. Capuccio almost cracked a smile, but held his commanding composure. "Fine. But, you screw this up and I'll have you back to driving up and down the street being an asshole giving out tickets for parking."
Jack was overcome with joy, but again, held his joy in and exited out with a small "Thank you sir."
John identified the car owner as a man named Mariano De Suares. Looking up his profile, he had been arrested on multiple accounts of theft and he was recently accused of identity theft. Jack was happy. He drove with Casey over to the man's home, only to be disappointed.
"Hola? Quien - I mean, who... are you?" An elderly Spanish woman slowly dragged out in her broken English.
"Hi, I'm Detective Roth, this is Detective Prescott, we would like to know if Mariano De Suares is here?"
The woman gave them a confused look, and shook her head. "Who? I don't know a Mariano, sorry." Suddenly, her English was a lot clearer.
"Okay. Thank you for your time." Jack smiled, as they walked back to their car.
"Fuck man. I thought I had it." Jack chuckled lowly, upset.
"Not every criminal can be found overnight. Nice criminals, are even harder to find. We have a sneaky bitch on our hands, and we just have to cut his ropes." Casey said.
"They gone, Ma?" A deep voice whispered.
Briana wiped off the make-up, and took the gray wig off. "Don't you ever have me do no shit like that again! An old woman, really? I could've just said you didn't fucking live h-" Mariano cut Briana off with a deep kiss, feeling all over her.
"But, you did it," Mariano smiled, kissing her again. "Now, come here, babygirl," he whispered in her ear as she, like the obedient little puppy she was, followed him into his bedroom.
"Empty handed?" Capuccio said, chuckling lowly and shaking his head.
"It's not over, Cap. You know it doesn't take 5 hours to catch a sneaky criminal."
"We started this case a long time ago. We know the guy's whereabouts, I don't get how this guy can literally sneak his way out of every single thing."
"We will find him. I will find him. He will be put behind bars before the day I die."
"It's been a very long night, Jack go home." Capuccio said, a hint of smile in his frown.
"Will do. I bet Amara is tearing her hair out right about now," Jack chuckled, making his way out of the building.
His walk to his own car wasn't very far; but the cold night air made his walk seem like hours as the air bit onto his ears and hands. "Alrighty then, I'll just start up the car now. It's freezing." Jack whispered to himself, pressing a button on his car key remote. His car started up and he walked a bit faster. Once he got to his car, he stopped abruptly as he saw a smudge on his car.
Blood.
"Holy shit, what-" Jack stepped back as he saw more smudges.
EVO dripped slowly down the front window of his car. Jack was horrified. He pulled out his cellphone, snapping many pictures.
What the hell is going on. Jack thought. He walked to his car door and noticed a yellow slip in his windshield as well.
This is your ticket. I'm telling you, Jack Roth, I want you more than anything. I wish I could kill you now, but it is much more fun watching you try to stop me. I want you to play a little game with me. Let's play, guess who's blood is on your car windows. Look behind you.
And, just like that. Jack saw the girl.
"Holy shit!" He screamed. This was too crazy. Evo had gone too far, this was the police department he was messing with now. Jack's question was how in the hell did he manage to get away with murder at a goddamned police station. Luckily, there was cameras and Jack wasted no time. Dialing 911 and making sure the ambulance was on its way, he ran back into his office.
"This is..." Jack huffed.
"Crazy? I know, trust me. I wouldn't want to believe this either, Jack Roth."
