The next morning dawned bright and clear, the sun filtering through Elara's bedroom window as she prepared for another day at work. Yet, despite her usual focus, her thoughts kept drifting back to Lucas. She replayed their conversation from the previous evening, a smile creeping onto her face at the memory of his compliment. The warmth of his words lingered in her mind, fueling her quiet obsession.

Just as she was about to leave, a flicker of movement caught her eye outside her window. She turned, squinting against the sunlight, and saw a moving truck parked next door, with a flurry of activity around it. A couple of strangers were unloading boxes and furniture, but one figure stood out—a girl with bright red hair and a bubbly personality that contrasted sharply with Elara's own demeanor.

As the girl laughed and joked with the movers, Elara felt a pang of unease in her stomach. *Who is she?* She leaned closer to the window, curiosity mixed with anxiety. Lucas stepped outside, his hands shoved deep into his pockets, a smile brightening his face as he greeted the newcomers. Elara's heart sank at the sight; he seemed so effortlessly charming with her, his laughter ringing out like music in the air.

By the time Elara arrived at work, her mind was racing. The new girl, Sophie, was everywhere in her thoughts. It wasn't just jealousy; it was a cold fear that gripped her. *What if Lucas liked her?* The thought made her stomach churn. Elara had always felt a sense of ownership over their friendship, convinced it was special, and now, here was someone who might take that away.

Throughout the day, she found it hard to concentrate. Her colleagues noticed her distraction but said nothing, aware that when Elara was deep in thought, it was best to let her be. Still, all she could picture was Lucas and Sophie, laughing together, sharing jokes, and building a connection that felt entirely out of her reach.

When she finally returned home that evening, her heart raced at the thought of encountering Lucas and the new girl. She stepped outside, hoping to catch a glimpse of them. As she rounded the corner of her house, she saw them chatting animatedly in the driveway, Sophie's vibrant laughter mixing with Lucas's soft chuckles.

Elara's heart sank further. She paused, hidden behind a nearby bush, listening to their conversation. Sophie was animated, her gestures grand and inviting, and Lucas seemed completely at ease, his boyish charm on full display. Elara clenched her fists, feeling a fire ignite within her.

"Have you tried making your cupcakes with lavender?" Sophie asked, her eyes wide with enthusiasm. "I've heard they're divine!"

Lucas chuckled, scratching the back of his neck. "I've never thought about that, but I'm willing to give it a shot."

Elara felt a surge of protectiveness wash over her. This was her Lucas—the one she had silently adored for years. She couldn't let this newcomer take him away from her, not after all the time she'd spent nurturing her feelings in secret.

Gathering her courage, she stepped out into the open, forcing a smile onto her face. "Hey, Lucas! Sophie!" she called, her voice stronger than she felt.

Both heads turned in her direction, Lucas's face lighting up with recognition, while Sophie's curiosity shone through. "Elara! I was just getting to know your neighbor," Sophie said, her voice bright and inviting.

"Yeah, I see that," Elara replied, keeping her tone steady as she approached. "So you're the new girl?"

"Yep! Just moved in," Sophie chirped, extending a hand. "I'm Sophie. It's great to meet you!"

Elara hesitated before shaking Sophie's hand, her grip firm but cool. "Welcome to the neighborhood," she said, forcing politeness. "If you need anything, just let me know."
