The days following their countryside trip were filled with a new kind of warmth. Riya felt more at ease with Aryan, and their relationship deepened in ways she hadn’t anticipated. But alongside the joy, there was something simmering beneath the surface. A quiet tension that came and went, though neither of them acknowledged it.

One evening, Aryan invited Riya over to his house for dinner with Arjun. It was a casual night, just the three of them, and Aryan promised her that he would cook. When Riya arrived, the house smelled like spices and freshly baked bread, and Aryan greeted her with a wide smile.

“Hey, beautiful! Dinner’s almost ready. Arjun’s setting the table,” he said, leaning in to kiss her cheek.

Riya smiled back, feeling a flutter in her chest. “It smells amazing in here. What’s on the menu?”

Aryan laughed. “It’s a surprise, but you’re going to love it. Just relax. I’ve got this covered.”

As Aryan busied himself in the kitchen, Riya wandered into the dining room, where Arjun was meticulously placing plates and glasses on the table. He looked up and smiled as she entered.

“Hey, Riya. Aryan’s been talking about this dinner for days. He’s determined to impress you.”

Riya laughed softly. “He already has. I didn’t know he could cook.”

“He doesn’t, really,” Arjun said with a playful grin. “But he’s learning for you.”

They both shared a quiet laugh before falling into a comfortable silence. Arjun seemed lost in thought for a moment, before turning to her with a more serious expression.

“How are things going between you two? You seem... different lately. In a good way, I mean.”

Riya paused, sensing the weight behind his question. “Yeah, things are good. I feel like we’re getting closer. He’s been really open with me, and I feel like I’m part of something real.”

Arjun nodded slowly, but there was something in his eyes—something Riya couldn’t quite place. Before she could ask more, Aryan called from the kitchen.

“Dinner’s ready!”

They sat down to eat, the three of them chatting and laughing like usual. The food was surprisingly delicious, and Aryan was beaming with pride at Riya’s compliments. But as the night went on, Riya couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off. Arjun, usually lively and engaging, was quieter than usual, his focus elsewhere. He seemed to watch her and Aryan more closely, as if observing the dynamic between them.

After dinner, they all moved to the living room, where Aryan suggested they play a card game. As they sat on the floor, shuffling the deck, the atmosphere lightened again. But as the game progressed, an unexpected moment caught Riya off guard.

She made a joke—something silly and lighthearted—but it triggered a strange reaction from Arjun. He smiled, but it didn’t reach his eyes. It was a fleeting moment, but Riya noticed it. Aryan, completely oblivious, was too busy concentrating on the game.

Riya couldn’t help but glance at Arjun again, and for the first time, she felt a strange distance between them. It was as if the unspoken bond they had formed during their trip was slowly unraveling. She couldn’t understand why, but it gnawed at her.

As the evening came to an end, Aryan got up to clear the table, leaving Riya and Arjun alone again. She turned to him, trying to understand what was going on.

“Are you okay? You’ve been kind of quiet tonight,” she asked gently.

Arjun hesitated, his eyes flickering with something unspoken. “Yeah, I’m fine. Just... thinking.”

“About what?” she pressed, sensing there was more to it.

He looked at her for a long moment, as if debating whether to say more. “Riya, I’m happy for you and Aryan. I really am. But... just be careful, okay?”

Her heart skipped a beat. “Careful? What do you mean?”

Arjun’s expression softened, but there was a sadness in his eyes. “He cares about you a lot. I just don’t want to see you get hurt.”

Riya felt a cold wave wash over her. “Why would I get hurt?”

Arjun shook his head, as if trying to brush off the weight of his words. “It’s nothing. Forget I said anything.”

But Riya couldn’t forget

But Riya couldn’t forget. His words lingered, filling the room with an unspoken tension. Before she could ask more, Aryan returned, oblivious to the exchange that had just taken place.

As the night came to a close, and Riya hugged Aryan goodbye, her mind was racing. Arjun’s warning played over and over in her head. What did he mean? Why would she need to be careful?

And why, in that moment, did she feel a sudden chill between her and Aryan—something she hadn’t noticed before?

As she walked home, her heart felt heavy with questions. The perfect image of forever she had been building in her mind now seemed fragile, as if cracks were beginning to show. And for the first time, Riya wondered if there was something she wasn’t seeing—something that could change everything.
