Peaceful nights of sleep were rare when Aegon had not drunk enough. Though he had taken a few cups during dinner, the omega would give all the credit to Jace and his gentle words from the previous night.

Unfortunately, his pleasant dreams were interrupted by a pillow being thrown directly at his face. It was difficult to wake him without some force; even the servants had to shout or shake the prince to wake him up, so this was not surprising. Aegon grumbled as he pushed the thrown pillow away. He wiped the drool that had fallen on his face while sitting up in bed, trying to wake up fully. It was tempting to remain in the warm comfort of his bed.

"Valyrian tradition?" His mother's voice was almost frightening so early in the morning. She seemed as nervous as she had been the previous day. "You are already a grown man; how can you be so ignorant?"

Aegon did not fully comprehend her words, but he was certain that Jacaerys had already asked the King for a change in plans, and it seemed his request had been granted.

Good.

"You are so fond of traditions, I thought you would be pleased with me for following one." Aegon rose, moving to the table in his chamber where a jug of water awaited. He drank directly from it, causing Alicent to wrinkle her face in disgust. "It's not a great matter. Jace seemed eager for it; should I have said no? I thought you wanted me to be modest and submissive." He laughed.

"The Gods will not be present at your wedding; it will be even more cursed. Do you truly not grasp the gravity of what is about to befall you?" The Queen huffed. "You preferred to shame me before everyone rather than fight against what will ruin your life. I shall never forget what you put me through last night."

"And what other future would you wish for me, mother? Is there anything better than being the Queen of the Seven Kingdoms? Tell me, you know very well about this."

Though Aegon harbored resentment toward his mother for many reasons, he was aware of her sorrows. Being Queen of the Seven Kingdoms was not what Lady Alicent had desired for herself in her youth. Aegon would have liked to know his mother's younger self; he believed she would have been more loving.

"You would be an acceptable husband for Aemond." Aegon, who had been drinking more water, spat it out dramatically onto the floor.

"You would wed me to that wretch? How much do you hate me, mother?"

"He is your brother. An honorable man, talented and diligent, far more than you deserve!" She did not hesitate to argue, her anger clear upon hearing her favored son insulted. "But I also think you are more than that... more than what the princess's son deserves."

"He treated me better in one day than Aemond would in a lifetime."

"You did not treat him better in your childhood."

Aegon rolled his eyes so hard he feared they might get lost in his skull. No matter the subject, Aemond and Alicent always managed to steer it back to childhood grievances.

It must have been dreadful to be the butt of jokes for ab older brother and nephews, all with dragons except himself, but Aegon did not believe that all this pain was enough for Aemond to want to destroy the world around him. Poor thing... He was a target of mockery. He truly deserves to humiliate his tormentors a few times... But that's all.

Aegon would understand if his brother hated him forever due to the problems they had in childhood, but making it everyone's problem was an exaggeration. Aegon had gone through worse things that few knew of. He would cry before sleeping, and whenever he saw a newborn, he felt like vomiting, but that was his problem. Not everyone's.
