By the time Saturday rolls around, I've somehow convinced myself that going to Ryan Harper's party won't be the absolute worst thing in the world, maybe. Meghan has been talking about River non-stop, and while I don't particularly care about her crush's social life, the look on her face when she begged me to come with her was too painful to ignore.

I'm doing this for Meghan, my best friend, unlicensed therapist, and unfit fitness coach
For Meghan

We got ready in the apartment, Meghan choosing something tight and bright while I stuck to something a little more muted- jean shorts, a string top, and my trusty leather jacket. I'm trying to survive the night and get out unscathed.

"You look hot," Meghan says, throwing a grin my way as she adjusts her hoop earrings.

"Thanks," I mutter, sliding my phone into my jacket pocket. "Let's just get this over with."

We arrive at the party a little after ten, the thumping bass of music reverberating through the street before we even step inside. Ryan Harper's house is exactly what I expected-huge, too clean for someone who throws parties like this, and packed with people.

I lose Meghan almost immediately. She spots River near the drinks and gives me a quick wave before disappearing into the crowd. Great. Alone at a party I didn't want to go to.

I find a corner near the back of the room, hoping to go unnoticed, when suddenly, there he is. Ryan Harper.

Even from across the room, he's hard to miss. Tall, broad-shouldered, and every bit the arrogant, overconfident jerk I've heard about. He's surrounded by a group of people, most of them girls, of course, all hanging on his every word. He's laughing at something, probably something unfunny, and for a moment, I think I'm safe from his attention.

But then his eyes scan the room and land right on me.

Damn it.

Ryan raises an eyebrow, his smile faltering for just a second before he excuses himself from his group and starts heading my way. I feel my stomach knotting up.

"hey love, you thirsty?" he says, stopping a few feet away from me. His voice is smoother than I imagined.

"No thanks," I reply, keeping my tone neutral with a hint of disinterest. Go away go away people are looking I quietly chant in my head

"Are you new here? I would never someone like you " He flashes that famous grin, the one I've seen way too many girls fall for. Not me though I know his game.

"I'm not new," I tell him deadpan. Now he looks genuinely curious. "So you just skipped the last two years... Ouch," he continues, taking a sip from his red cup. "You're breaking my heart we could be married by now "

"Don't let your fangirls hear that one," I say, turning my head, trying not to smile.

"let them hear." His eyes gleam with something that makes me uncomfortable, but I keep my expression blank. "your funeral ."

Ryan nods slowly, his gaze lingering on me a little too long for my liking. "Well, I'm glad you came. I'll be looking for you in the crowds from now on "

Before I can respond, he walks off, disappearing back into the crowd like nothing happened. But something in the way he looked at me lingered an unsettling feeling creeping up my spine.

I shake it off. It's just Ryan Harper being Ryan Harper.

Still, I can't help but wonder if coming to this party was an even bigger mistake than I thought.
