The sun rose early the next morning, casting a warm glow through Tessa’s bedroom window. She stretched and yawned, the excitement of the upcoming track meet giving her an extra boost of energy. Today was the day she would run with Alex, and she was eager to see how their friendly rivalry would unfold.

After a quick breakfast, Tessa laced up her running shoes, mentally preparing for their morning run. She grabbed her water bottle and headed out, feeling the cool morning air fill her lungs as she made her way to the nearby park where they had agreed to meet.

When she arrived, Alex was already there, warming up and stretching. He wore a fitted athletic shirt that accentuated his toned physique, and Tessa felt a flutter of nerves and excitement wash over her.

“Morning, Tessa!” he called out, his smile brightening the early hour. “Ready to get your butt kicked?”

“Not a chance,” she replied, returning his grin as she began her own warm-up routine. “You might want to stretch a little more, though. You’ll need it.”

As they finished their warm-ups, the air buzzed with friendly competition. “Let’s do a few laps around the park,” Alex suggested, his competitive nature shining through. “First one back to the start wins.”

“Bring it on,” Tessa shot back, her determination hardening.

They set off, the sound of their footsteps pounding against the pavement echoing in the stillness of the morning. Tessa focused on her breathing, feeling the rush of adrenaline surge through her as she pushed herself to keep pace with Alex.

The first lap went smoothly, but as they approached the second, Tessa could feel Alex gaining speed beside her. She quickened her pace, her heart racing not just from the exertion, but from the thrill of competing against him.

“Not bad, Virgo!” he called out, his voice light with laughter. “But you’ll need to do better than that to keep up with me!”

“Don’t get too cocky!” Tessa shot back, her competitive spirit flaring as she surged ahead.

As they approached the finish line, Tessa dug deep, summoning all her energy for a final push. She crossed the imaginary line just seconds before Alex, panting heavily but unable to suppress a triumphant smile.

“Alright, I’ll give you that one,” Alex said, leaning over with his hands on his knees, breathing heavily. “You ran like a beast out there!”

“Thanks! I couldn’t let you win,” Tessa replied, her cheeks flushed with exhilaration.

They took a moment to catch their breath, the friendly rivalry between them sparking a deeper connection. “You really are fast,” Alex admitted, a newfound respect shining in his eyes. “I didn’t think you’d push me like that.”

“Just trying to keep you on your toes,” Tessa teased, feeling a warmth spread within her.

As they began to cool down, Tessa felt an undeniable sense of happiness. This run had shifted something between them; it was no longer just about competition, but about shared experiences and camaraderie.

“Let’s make this a regular thing,” Alex suggested, wiping the sweat from his brow. “I could use someone to challenge me during practice.”

“Deal,” Tessa said, her heart soaring. “But you’d better step up your game if you want to keep up with me.”

“Challenge accepted,” he replied, a playful smirk on his lips.

As they walked back to their cars, Tessa felt giddy with excitement. The morning had solidified their bond, and she was eager to see how their relationship would continue to evolve. But as they approached their vehicles, Tessa’s heart dropped when she saw Chase leaning against her car, a smug expression on his face.

“Look who it is, the star athlete and her new boyfriend,” he said, his tone dripping with sarcasm.

Tessa felt a wave of annoyance wash over her. “What do you want, Chase?” she snapped, trying to keep her composure.

“Just came to see how you were doing, Tessa,” he replied, stepping closer. “Thought I’d check in on my favorite track star.”

“Spare me the act,” she said, crossing her arms. “You don’t care about how I’m doing.”

“Maybe I do,” he insisted, his eyes narrowing. “You’ve been spending a lot of time with him. Don’t you think you’re making a mistake?”

Alex stepped forward, a protective stance in his posture. “Tessa doesn’t need your advice, Chase. She can make her own choices.”

“Look, I’m just looking out for her,” Chase replied, his voice hardening. “She’s too good for you, Barren. You’re just a distraction.”

“Maybe it’s you who’s the distraction,” Tessa shot back, her frustration bubbling over. “I’m tired of you acting like you own me.”

Chase scoffed, but before he could respond, Alex interjected. “You need to leave, Chase. Tessa’s moved on.”

Chase’s expression darkened, and for a moment, Tessa felt a twinge of fear. But then she looked at Alex, whose presence gave her strength.

“Fine,” Chase said, throwing up his hands. “But don’t come crying to me when you realize you made a mistake.”

With that, he turned and walked away, leaving tension in the air. Tessa exhaled deeply, the weight of the confrontation hanging over her.

“Are you okay?” Alex asked, concern etched across his face.

“Yeah, I’m fine,” Tessa replied, though her heart was still racing. “It’s just… frustrating. I thought I was done with him.”

“You will be,” Alex assured her, his voice steady. “Just focus on yourself and the upcoming meet. You’ve got what it takes to be amazing out there.”

“Thanks, Alex,” she said softly, feeling gratitude for his support.

As they exchanged glances, Tessa felt a flicker of something deeper, a warmth spreading through her at the way he cared. This was more than just rivalry; it was starting to feel like a genuine connection.

“Let’s get ready for the meet,” Tessa said, trying to shake off the tension. “We can’t let Chase ruin our morning.”

“Agreed,” Alex replied, a smile returning to his face. “Just don’t get too comfortable. I still plan to beat you.”

“Good luck with that,” she teased, a spark of determination igniting within her.
