"Bhai, aapne shaadi karli?" Rivaan's voice echoed in the room.

I felt my heart race. What was I doing here? I had just run away from my wedding, and now I was standing in the penthouse of a man I didn't know, with his brother staring at me like I was an alien.

"Rivaan, it's not like—"

Before Avyukt could say anything further, Rivaan stood up, his eyes sparkling with excitement. "You got married without even telling me!" he exclaimed, almost jumping out of his seat. He rushed over and grabbed a glass of water from the table, handing it to me with a huge smile on his face.

"Chalo, koi na! I'll still accept you as my bhabi," he continued. "You are so pyaari pyaari, and you guys are looking good together"

I blinked in disbelief. Bhabi? I just ran away from my wedding. damn. What on earth was he saying? I looked at Avyukt, who seemed just as shocked as I was.

He then glared at Rivaan. "Rivaan, shut up and listen to me." As soon as he said that- almost warned him, Rivaan went quiet, looking at Avyukt quietly. It was like someone had pressed a mute button on him.

Avyukt turned to me, "Avaira, sit on the couch."

I nodded and sat down, still trying to process everything. My hands trembled as I placed them on my lap. I was safe here, away from my wedding, but why did I feel like I had jumped from one fire into another?

Avyukt turned back to Rivaan, frustration written all over his face. "I didn't marry her. She ran away from her wedding, okay? some idiots started following her and She needed help. i helped her, she couldn't go anywhere else so i took her here."

Rivaan's excitement faded and an upset expression came on his face. "Oh, okay," he said, scratching his head. "So, you're not my bhabi, then?"

I shook my head. "No, I'm not. i'm just avaira, avaira dhillon. And I ran away because my fiancé—no, ex-fiancé—cheated on me, but my father was forcing me to marry him."

Hell, did I just open up in front of them? Was I really that desperate to share my story? i shouldn't. i never did to anyone so why now?

Rivaan processed what I said and glanced at Avyukt then back at me, "You're really brave," he said, breaking the silence. "Most women wouldn't have the courage to do that."

Brave. That word echoed in my mind. Was I really brave? Or was I just running away?  I felt like a coward hiding behind this new label.

I took a deep breath. "I didn't have a choice," I replied, forcing a smile. "I'd rather be free than trapped in a marriage that would only break me."

They both nodded at the same time, Rivaan looked over at the food on the dining table. "Did you guys eat dinner already?"

I glanced at the big clock hanging on the wall: 1:38 AM. Time had slipped away from me like sand through my fingers. Rivaan followed my gaze and shrugged. "I know it's late, but Bhai always comes home late, so I've gotten used to eating dinner late."
