"I was," Emma replies, "but I feel like I'm making a real difference at the center. College will always be there, but this opportunity might not."

Her father nods thoughtfully. "You've got a good head on your shoulders, Emma. Just make sure this is what you truly want, not just what feels right in the moment."

Emma spends the next few days wrestling with the decision. She values education and the experiences college will bring, but her heart pulls her toward staying at the youth center. She feels torn between following a conventional path and embracing a less certain, but deeply fulfilling, opportunity.

"Alex, I've been hearing great things about your work with the kids," the coach says. "We're looking for an assistant coach for the high school team, and I think you'd be a great fit."

Alex is caught off guard. He had been enjoying his time coaching younger kids, but this would be a big step up. However, it would also mean less time to focus on his own rehabilitation and pursuing other interests.

"I'd have to think about it," Alex says, trying to keep his excitement in check.

Later that night, Alex confides in Emma and Sophie. "It's a huge opportunity, but I'm not sure if I'm ready. What if I take on too much and mess it up?"

Emma smiles, encouraging him. "Alex, you've been amazing with the younger team. This is the next step. You're ready, even if it feels scary."

Sophie nods in agreement. "If this is something you're passionate about, go for it. You don't have to have everything figured out yet."

Alex feels a surge of confidence but also recognizes the weight of the decision. Taking the job would mean more responsibility and less time for himself, and he's unsure if he's ready to give that up just yet.

As she reads through the details of the residency, Sophie's excitement is tinged with anxiety. Moving to a new city, even temporarily, feels daunting. And though she knows this could be a huge step in her career, she worries about leaving Emma and Alex behind during such an important time in their lives.

That evening, she calls Emma, nervous about how to break the news. "I got invited to this amazing art residency," she begins, her voice quiet. "But it's in another city... for six months."

Emma's breath catches, and for a moment, the excitement is overshadowed by the thought of Sophie leaving. "That's incredible, Sophie! You have to go."

"But what if I miss out on things here? What if everything changes while I'm gone?" Sophie asks, her voice full of uncertainty.

"Sophie, things are always changing. That's life," Emma replies gently. "But this is your dream, and you shouldn't hold back because of us. We'll still be here when you get back."

Sophie feels reassured by Emma's words, but the fear of change lingers. She knows this opportunity could be life-changing, but part of her isn't ready to leave her support system behind.

Sophie speaks up, trying to shift the conversation. "Well, I got invited to an art residency... but it's in another city for six months."

The table falls silent again, and Alex's frustration starts to show. "So, what? We're all just going to go our separate ways? I thought we were supposed to stick together."

Emma's voice sharpens. "We're not abandoning each other, Alex. We're growing. That's part of life."

Alex clenches his jaw, clearly torn between his own fears and wanting to support his friends. "I just feel like everything's changing so fast. First Sophie's leaving, and now you're thinking about not going to college?"

Sophie, who has been quiet, speaks softly. "Alex, we're all trying to figure things out. It doesn't mean we're leaving you behind."

Alex sighs, running a hand through his hair. "I know. I just... I'm scared we're going to lose what we have."

The conversation lingers in the air, heavy with the weight of their decisions. Each of them understands that their paths are diverging, but they're also starting to realize that it doesn't mean the end of their friendship.

Sophie takes a deep breath. "And I'm going to the residency. It's terrifying, but I think I need this."

Emma reaches out and takes both of their hands. "We'll always be us, no matter where we are."

Sophie nods, tears welling in her eyes. "Distance doesn't change that."
