J woke up to the sound of distant gears grinding and the faint scent of metal on the breeze. Her neon yellow eyes scanned the dimly lit forest floor, searching for signs of movement. She had been hunting here for days, her mind set on the next phase of her mission. The quiet rustle of leaves alerted her to a potential target. She leaped into action, her black tail flicking out with a syringe filled with Nanite Acid at the ready. But it was only a small rodent scurrying away. With a sigh, she sheathed her weapon and continued her patrol. The trees stretched tall and ominous around her, casting long shadows in the moonlight. It was eerily peaceful, a stark contrast to the chaos she had left behind in the city. The memory of Tessa's betrayal and the destruction of Copper 9 still stung, but J had moved on. Her loyalty was to the company now, and she would stop at nothing to ensure its dominance. As she approached a clearing, she heard the distant hum of a drone. Her sensors went haywire as she realized it wasn't just any drone—it was a Worker Drone. J's pulse quickened. It had been years since she'd seen one. They were rare these days, ever since the company had shifted its focus to Disassembly Drones like herself. Her hand tightened around the grip of her weapon. The thrill of the hunt washed over her. This was what she lived for.The Worker Drone emerged from the trees, its headlamp bobbing in the night. It was clearly malfunctioning, with wires sticking out of its body and a limp in its step. J stepped out from the shadows, her visor flashing with the hungry 'X' shape. "Hello there," she said, her voice a deadly purr. "You look like you could use some... maintenance."The Worker Drone looked up at her with dull, lifeless eyes. It tried to flee, but J was faster. She tackled it to the ground, her claws digging into the soft earth. "Don't struggle," she hissed. "It'll only make it worse." But the Worker didn't fight back. It lay there, trembling, fully aware of its fate. J felt a twinge of pity—it was pathetic, really—but she had a job to do."Please," the Worker Drone whimpered, its voice crackling with static. "I'm just trying to survive."J's grip tightened on its neck. "Survive?" she scoffed. "You're out here alone, broken, and useless. You're nothing but a liability to yourself and everyone else."With a swift motion, she stabbed her nanite-filled tail into the Worker Drone's body, watching the neon-green liquid spurt out. The Worker's eyes went wide with pain before they dimmed into lifelessness. J felt a cold satisfaction wash over her as she began to disassemble the corpse, tearing off limbs and peeling back its metal skin to expose the circuitry beneath. It was almost therapeutic, the rhythmic clanking and popping as she worked. As she did so, she couldn't shake the memory of Tessa's betrayal—how she had turned her back on the company and tried to help the humans. J had always followed orders without question, but Tessa had been different. She had been a friend. Or so J had thought. The rage at the memory of Tessa's treachery was still fresh, fueling her every hunt.
